It's great when you go and see an Elvis tribute act and they do 'American Trilogy'! Have to remind myself I'm not listening to the Manics!

Not really. Just because they are welsh doesn't mean they aren't British too. If wales was famous for its pottery, perhaps that would have been used. Also, they've not always been as proud to be welsh as they are now.

That's fine, I just don't get it. Why specify Lancashire and Blackpool if they're referring to themselves? The reason I ask and asked is the only thing I can find which makes any relationship there is the syllable "tri".

I'm not denying it means the other things though.... I just find it hard to believe the first song on EMG refers to a trilogy and is not self referencing richey's disappearance.
Wow, you over-thought that one a little I think!

It's just something I thought.....I think there are other reasons for blackpool and lancashire, and another meaning which links in with that. I think the song is a little autobiographical in that they are comparing themselves to the elvis impersonator.

I don't think they're considering Welshness or Englishness at all. Richey at least wanted to write lyrics that anyone could be affected by, not just those who are from the same country as he. Actually he was far less likely to be praising Wales than Nicky, I think he prefered individualism to nationalism - and the valleys never gave him a reason to stay.

I saw an Elvis tribute act once, opening for another band at a dire venue in Bridlington. Better than any band I've seen supporting the Manics

As for the song, I can't believe I still haven't seen them play it after all this time!
