Filling a vacuum left by all the peace and love bands of the current baggies 'n' longhair boom, along come The Manic Street Preachers, the band who love to hate.
"We are the scum that remind people of misery," they proclaim. Complaining bitterly about the rock music status quo they insist, "There's two choices in pop today - Del Boy or Che Guevara."
Mixing the energy of pop art bands like The Who and the anarchy of punk, they sport a natty line in message-shirts. "Kill Yourself" and "Generation Terrorists" are just two of the motifs which have helped these Welsh hopefuls gain attention.
They also manage to create a hell of a racket. Their single Motown Junk has alerted fans to some interesting musical possibilities.
Next week they arrive in Ireland. Provided some audiences don't over-react, they'll be spreading their gospel at Charlie's Bar in Dublin on Saturday 27.
