The legendary Bowie producer gets set to work his magic on the follow-up to 'Know Your Enemy'...

Manic Street Preachers have begun work on their new album with legendary producer Tony Visconti.

The Manic Street Preachers arrived in New York yesterday (October 26) to begin sessions for their seventh album. It is the first time that the band have worked with Visconti, who produced the classic David Bowie albums ‘Space Oddity’, ‘The Man Who Sold The World’ and ‘Diamond Dogs’.

Nicky Wire has pledged recently to make a stripped-down album of ‘elegiac pop’ in contrast to their fiery previous album, ‘Know Your Enemy’. Tracks in the running for inclusion include ‘Emily’, in tribute to leader of the Suffragette movement Emmeline Pankhurst, and ‘Everything Will Be’, premiered at Glastonbury this year.

Wire told Manchester’s City Life magazine: “It’s ‘elegiac pop’, it’s a huge lament for world society! But it’s very snappy, I want the album to be quite short, ten songs of beautiful melody, something that can be sad but really uplifting, just that really fractured, fragmented, isolated, but it really gives you a warm feeling. There’s always gonna be politics, there’s a song about Emmeline Pankhurst, because when they did that poll of Great Britons, I just thought it was so incredibly sad that she was kind of ignored, and Princess Diana was Number Two or something. How can that be? I think it’s a devastating slight on the population of this country that some women were prepared to die for the vote and just, no-one voted for her.”

Visconti reunited with David Bowie for his two most recent albums, ‘Reality’ and ‘Heathen’.
