Manic Street Preachers bassist was rushed to hospital with concussion at the weekend after being hit by a bottle onstage at the Swansea Melody Maker/Heineken Festival.

A shower of bottles had blighted the Manics set and others by Pele, Lovecraft and The Tansads all through the day. Nicky was hit by a wine bottle, half-way through the Manics' set as they were playing 'Drug Drug Druggy'. The band immediately left the stage after James Dean Bradfield announced: "One concussed, three to go. Well done, you brainless wankers!"

Following appeals from the organisers to the crowd to tone down their behaviour, the Manics returned but were, once again, confronted by more missiles. After the show, Wire was taken to the city's Singleton Hospital. Guitarist Richey Edwards told The Maker: "Most bands look forward to their homecoming gig. I don't expect roses and petals at my feet, but the amount of grief we get here is non-stop. Anything from Welsh bands complaining about us 'betraying Wales' by not singing in Welsh, to gangs of blokes pouring lager over me and saying 'What are you gonna do about that?' Tom Jones doesn't get it!"

The Manics' next release will be an EP, ironically featuring a re-recorded version of 'Roses In The Hospital'.
