Nicky Wire gets a nice surprise in Swansea...

Manic Street Preacher Nicky Wire has been given a lifelong honorary fellowship of Swansea University.

Their show at the town’s Brangwyn Hall was interrupted by the university’s Vice Chancellor, who presented Wire with his fellowship.

Receiving his Honorary Fellowship, Nicky Wire said: "I never got a chance to receive my own degree as we were on tour at the time. This more than makes up for it - what a great way to start a gig."

Vice-Chancellor Richard B Davies added: "To present such a creative graduate of Swansea with an Honorary Fellowship is a genuine pleasure.

"Nicky has made an exceptional contribution to the world of music. The lyrics he writes for the band display a keen awareness of political history that has firm roots in Welsh radicalism.

"It is heartening to see that his studies at Swansea have remained with him and I wish him, and the rest of the band, continued success for the future."

The bass player and motormouth graduated from Swansea with a politics degree in 1990, and alongside Richey Edwards, became the band’s ideological backbone.

Manic Street Preachers tour the UK this month, visiting the smaller towns and venues after last year’s arena jaunt.
