Manic Street Preachers star James Dean Bradfield has vowed not to become an ageing rocker - he says he will quit the stage before his 40th birthday.

James, 30, reckons he will be too old to perform the band's all-action live show after that.

The millionaire Manics singer said: "I'm 30 and I can't imagine being able to do live shows when I'm 40.

"I don't mind saying I think we're a brilliant live band and we move around a lot.

"Everything stems from the fact that we come from a punk background and we are a political band.

"But you have to be aware that as you get older you may not be able to carry that off."

James was speaking on a visit to his home town of Blackwood in Gwent. He says he loves going back home after months touring the world.

"It's much easier than walking down the street in any other part of Britain because people are so much more blase about it. It's a really cool place to come back to."

The Manics are making final arrangement for their Millennium Eve concert in Cardiff.

But they have been beaten in the race to sell out the Millennium Stadium - by TV's Songs of Praise.

All 66,000 tickets for a live broadcast of the religious show on January 2 have been snapped up.
