Manics in defiant mood as they scoop two Brits

Manic Street Preachers scored a "double double" at the Brits, held at the London Arena last Tuesday (February 16).

They picked up two major awards - for Best Band and Best Album - just as they did at the 1997 awards. And they are now the first band to win a Brit for consecutive album releases. Their office immediately commented: "At a time dominated by pure pop, they have made guitars sexy again without compromise."

The Manics' thank yous were brief, but memorable. Accepting the Brit for Best British Group from Lee Evans and Kylie Minogue, James said, "Thank you very much", and then yelled/sang, 'Manic Street Preachers", while Nicky Wire skipped, poker-faced, beside him.

Later, the band collected their Best British Album award from Mariella Frostrup and Prince Naseem. James said: "I'd like to say thank you to all our mums and dads back home, Rob Stringer [Epic MD], Martin Hall (manager], everybody at Hall Or Nothing [press agency], Joe Strummer, Paul Simonon, Mick Jones, Topper Headon [The Clash] and Steve Ovett [former Olympic runner]."
