Most bands just lower the keys of the songs to make it possible to continue singing. Robert Plant did this at the Led Zepp gig in London a few years ago.

I like James' jacket, I want it! PCP was awesome, I loved watching that and singing along, Sun was OK but I wish James wouldn't sing it so girly-like all the time, and I used to love EMG so much but now it's beyond weak and kind of cringe worthy to see done live, they need to retire that one I hate to say it. Great set overall, enjoyed it a lot!

I remember seeing Sinatra in 1980 at the Royal Albert Hall, he was awful, off tune, like a Karaoke singer but the star quality was there so all was forgiven.

I think the Mud song was one example of live vocals.

At the other end of the scale you have Debbie Harry who kept it real and sounded painful.

Debbie Harry never much of a singer back in the day, probably one of the first singers to rely on the look and not the voice. Kim Wilde then came along as the British version

Not the very best gig, but some nice bits and got me bang in the mood for Metallica and the rest of my night. Stood riiiiight at the back of the Other Stage field and took in the audience a bit which was nice.

They need to speed PCP up though and stop playing it quite so slowly; it sounds like they're taking the piss like when they did Suicide Alley a few years ago.

Liked the song choice and all that (a dream came true with seeing PCP) but am I the only one who thought that JDB's voice didn't sound as strong as usual? Somehow strained to some extent?

I think he has sounded like that for a couple of years, he tends to compansate by shouting the lyrics

Also at an outdoor festival you tend to get a rather rushed version of your usual soundcheck and have to rely on other peoples kit and personnel to an extent - notforgetting that Glasto has hundreds of stages (and about 7 large ones near the one they were playing) - he could've been shouting for his own benefit

Over the course of the years there is a definite change in James' voice. You have the early raw aggression up til Know Your Enemy more or less. That was tamed in the early 00's to some extent, partly by truth but still with that soaring tenor behind it, so this largely went unnoticed. By the end of the 00's his rasp had mellowed somewhat, and this has continued further. So now rather than the roar of old, it can sound slightly forced.

All that said, this is completely understandable. Listen to any rock or metal singer with a career behind them, and you hear a big change after 15 or 20 years; the rasp many have is a natural sharp sound that does dull with age.

No soundchecks at festivals at all; except for some opening acts (if lucky) and mainstage headliners (if logistically possible.) Obviously the other bands do a line check, but not a soundcheck.

James tends to talk through lyrics melodically rather than sing these days...

^Correcto! But many bands (depending on size obviously) carry their own FOH and monitor mixing desks and engineers, that will be soundchecked at a rehearsal then the settings will be saved and then loaded at the festival, and then just tweaked. The Manics always have their own monitor desk at UK festivals, and Chris Trimby (their monitor engineer) travels round the world with them.
