Orwellian - The return to euphoric melancholia

Well, there is *something* about this song. I think it's utterly brilliant -it grows after each listen - and deserves its own thread. I noticed some old-school-Manics fans popping by again which is a good sign.

Does the song get airplay by the way? In mainland Europe it's release is completely unnoticed.

Just checked the Radio 1 and 2 playlists and nothing there. Could get more airplay nearer the time of album release.
But at the minute, it's just us faithful!
Huge, massive disservice to the song. Maybe if singles were released the way they used to.
I know it'll be a great album. But I don't think it's going to get the Radio support it should.
*Sighs

If we look at this objectively, it has to be considered the worst first single misstep since The Love of Richard Nixon.

Anything positive you can find to say about it is negated by the universal shrug it received.

Still, there’s cause for optimism. Now Radio 2 has turned its back on them, they can stop choosing the most uninteresting tracks from their albums as singles. Long overdue.

Oh tomorrow we'll hear the album and scream "Why didn't they release THAT as the first single instead?!!".
But for now, it's all about Orwellian. (Well for those still interested)

And at least they didn't do a Status Quo and tried to sue the BBC for not playing their music in the 90's.

The Manics are not played on Radio 1 or Radio 2. The Manics have never been played on Radio 1 or Radio 2.

But then has it been released as a single single, or just an introductory track (still good!) for the album?

I wondered this too - the album is so far out it's almost just felt like a soft-launch to announce that the album is coming and tour tickets are going on sale.

Not that I'm 100% sure what would make it feel more like a single? If they showed up on Jools Holland playing it?

Isn’t that question just so perfect for the subject matter though?

‘It feels impossible … to get b-sides’

Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but a single to me has to take in a physical format really. An artefact with b-sides. And it feels like we’re being deprived of b-sides, which have always been genuine points of interest in this band’s catalogue.

Just chucking it out onto streaming services overhead-free doesn’t really feel like it counts as a ‘single’. I know it’s ‘the way things are done these days’ but I think it devalues the art of The Single for me.. Maybe it’s Columbia’s way of saying they consider MSP to be an album & reissues act now.

“Here’s a preview of the lead track from the new album to thank y’all for the album pre-orders. And no you can’t have it on 7” with a b-side better than anything on that forthcoming album, sorry”

Yeah, doesn’t count. (Though I’d very much like to hear the Gwenno remix)

Yes, the Manics are often played on Radio 1 or Radio 2. The Manics have always often been played on Radio 1 or Radio 2.
