Of course that's how it's supposed to be. The reality is that we've had to put up with sentimental nostalgia ever since Lifeblood bombed. Something which the reviewer seems acutely aware of two paragraphs down

But Rewind the Film will go down as one of their great works. Instead of ploughing on as a “remember us” Britpop heritage act banging out self-parodying new material, they’ve found a new plough to furrow here – and brilliantly so.

Their worst album since Lifeblood according to the NME's scoring system.

Closer? Towards? They've been living off Radio 2 airplay for years.

As usual, NME writes a lot that says nothing.

Closer to Radio 2 than ever? Did they review Postcards rather then Rewind the Film? Or did he just listen to the single?

"Musically, it's their safest album yet"

Huh? I'd say that musically it is by FAAAAARRRR their most experimental album yet.

Did the writer even listen to the album?

Nothing will beat their 0/10 review for Forever Delayed just for existing. I don't know why they continue to humour the NME, it's not the same publication it was in their youth and just inane bullshit these days.

They surely can't get any closer to Radio 2 than Postcards?

Don't know why anyone is shocked about a shit quality NME review though.

The review tells you nothing about the album, nothing about the musical subtleties or the fact this sounds nothing like anything the Manics have done before. But it tells you everything about NME in that they immediately compare it to not being like GT or EMG. Which means the reviewer didn't go into this with the intention of listening to RTF as a piece of work in it's own right. Instead, they were waiting to hear something that sounded like GT or EMG and when that didn't happen they simply dismissed the album as being safe and MOR. It isn't. I finally caved in and listened to the whole thing last night and, while I have plenty to say about RTF, for now I'll just say that this is a genuinely artistic record that grows with each new listen. It's very different for the Manics and that's a good thing, Nicky's lyrics are very strong and perhaps even some of the best he's ever written.

You're absolutely right that it grows. On first listen I was thinking "ooh...this is a bit different...and a bit weird...hmmmm". It took me 3 or 4 listens to really start to get it. Loving it now

All the best albums are growers. Can't wait to fall in love with this one.

I should really go to Newport...
