'If You Tolerate This' Music Video

Right, I'm doing a commentary on this video for Media and I have to talk about symbolism, camera effects and such. I have everything sorted....pretty much. But what the hell are the sensor things about? I thought it might be something to do with seeing the world through technology. But that's crap, so any ideas?

Oh and also I don't understand why Sean's drumkit is in a bag

I've always thought that sensor thing thing the checkout scanners was just about putting a price on human lives?

I never thought of that, it is possible. It makes more sense than my initial thought, it ties in with the themes of the video.

It's in a bag, because they are in a sterile, laboratory environment, where they are forced to play the song over and over. The endless repetition turning their faces featureless. Lots of symbolism to look out for obviously, but you've probably picked up on those. Remember, a lot of things maybe just artistic flourishes with no deeper meaning than 'it looks cool'. This is a music promo, not a film.

I've sometimes wondered about the drum kit wrapped up and always thought the cable hanging down was plugged into Sean at the back making him like a drone / robot thing. I've never thought about it too much but it's one video I never get tired of seeing, it's brilliant and really adds to the coldness of the song I feel. I'm 100% positive it's their most expensive music video from an interview I read years ago.

Remember what the lyrics are about...the spanish civil war (there's a newspaper in the video iirc) in contrast to the apathy of the modern generations.

The hand scanners are soma-like pacifying devices. As the video progresses, the band slowly succumb to the morphine effect of modern life, Sean taking a hit of gas, making him smile with a dumb bliss, James losing his eyes, a symbol of how we ignore the horrors of the world.

Those helmets also reminded me of the outfits they'd wear in the Prisoner, during that strange game with the trampoline.

I didn't think of Sean in that way. But James I got, I wrote about the lyrics separately. It's strange what you find out about a song when you dissect it!

Why did you choose this song? Really not one of my favourite Manic songs. For a project like this I would have chosen Kevin Carter or La Triesta Durea (pardon my French for the last)
