This calls for a giant poll
A quick trawl through setlist.fm says they've covered 45 songs live in their career, although I suspect there's a fair few they've recorded but never performed in concert. And that doesn't include all the Motown Junk intros...

Plenty that I hadn't realised they've done, but proud to say I witnessed one of the two performances James has done of the Grandstand theme live!

Listening to Start Me Up, I can't help but think that Sean spent two minutes programming the drums and walked out of the studio in disgust. Plus the drums sound like utter ass as if recorded on a £200 starter kit.

Crikey so we’re probably looking at 60-70 covers if you include studio versions that haven’t been played live.

Agree with the Working Class Hero shout, and I’m not keen on Been A Son either. And as unpopular as it will be I’ve never really liked MASH although it’s ok live.

Best… Out Of Time, We Are All Bourgeois Now, Dancing Horses, Umbrella (yep), and I do like Borderline.

Grandstand Those SATT gigs were really good.

Best - always loved Out Of Time (just the way James says ‘baby’), the recent live covers have been brilliant especially In Between Days and Dancing Horses. Hope they do nice studio takes of them and do one of these new fangled Spotify playlist albums they started with the Duets playlist.

Worst - probably Wrote For Luck, more just cause of the dullness of the song rather than their performance of it

Best - (Feels Like) Heaven
Worst - Last Christmas … unfinished and kinda dull, left much to be desired.

Best - very tough question, too many good ones to choose from but Feels Like Heaven, Umbrella and Suicide Is Painlessare probably the top three for me but I could quite easily include many others.

Worst - Start Me Up (forgot how crap it was) - you can't polish a turd so credit for trying lads.

This is my covers playlist; full songs only, so excludes any Motown Junk intro snippets, between song riffs and noodling (off the top of my head JDB's done stuff like Wild Thing, Waterfall, This Charming Man, Tequila, etc riffs); includes James's solo stuff and sessions too, as well as 'feature' tracks where JDB contributes enough to make it worth our while as Manics fans.

I'm sure there's others out there, so if there's any I've missed, someone please let me know!

It's So Easy (Guns N' Roses cover) - Marquee, London, 04/09/91
Under My Wheels (Alice Cooper cover)
Theme From M*A*S*H (Suicide Is Painless)
What's My Name (The Clash cover) - Junction, Cambridge, 20/10/92
Wrote For Luck (Happy Mondays cover)
Charles Windsor (McCarthy cover)

Stay With Me (Faces cover) - Clapham Grand, London, 02/03/94
Bright Eyes - Astoria, London, 21/12/94
Last Christmas (Wham cover)
Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head
Velocity Girl (Primal Scream cover)
Take The Skinheads Bowling (Camper Van Beethoven cover)

Old Red Eyes Is Back (w. The Beautiful South)
Train In Vain (The Clash cover) - Arena, Newcastle, 14/12/98

Thumbs up

Fair play. Great work!

Some crackers in there that I had completely forgotten about.

Come Back (Mighty Wah!) is another one James has covered. Think it was for a Hillsborough-related gig, probably around 2010ish when he did Clampdown as well with Mick Jones and The Farm.

Yes We Can Can was another and that was probably 2015ish. Fairytale of New York in 2009 or 2010 and I Shall Be Released at the same gig as when James played YTBT with Weller.

I think they did The Killing Moon during the PFAYM tour as well.

Would it be reasonable to add the two covers on JDB’s solo albums to that list?

... and if James covering the Clampdown as part of his solo tour counts then shouldn't the covers Nicky did on his be included too?

Wrote For Luck is shit, Been a Son was needless at best, and good lord I'd forgotten Start Me Up, the very definition of inessential.
raindrops keep falling on my head for similar reasons to why you've picked out of time. A good tune, but made great by James's voice.

also agree they did a bad job with Been A Son. The riff just shorn of its vitality completely. Think they improved Pennyroyal tea though

It's a rare thing when a band does a cover and it effectively melts into their catalogue, to the extent that you barely question whether they wrote it or not. You know the ones: Hendrix Watchtower, Buckley Hallelujah, Clash I Fought The Law etc etc.

On that basis, MASH is the clear winner in my book. Yes, it has time on its side to bed in. But even as a kid, I always felt that it was just a Manics song while also knowing it was a cover.

Picking on a not great one feels a bit churlish, but if I had to choose, I'd say the recent Sweet Child of Mine one. I know the importnace of GnR to the band, but it just doesn't seem like a good fit.
