I saw Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes do 4 encores once. I kid ye not.

Encores are a complete waste of time. The best one I saw was Madness at Glasto. 'We haven't got time to do leave the stage and still do the last one, so we'll turn round for a minute and you can pretend we've pretended to go away and come back again'.

why do you want encore, when the world should end after A Design For Life?

Bryan Adams did three encores at wembley in 1992. Thought it entertaining to see the crowd stay for the first one then some of em not expect the second one. By the third everyone on the pitch started leaving only to turn around and move back en masse when he came back again. I know he's a bit shit but back then i thought he was AMAZING.

I don't like encores at all, but I think the only bands I've seen not do them are the Manics and Fever Ray which immediately makes both better than every other band, ever.

I once saw Radiohead do three encores. But then they played about 26 songs and they have so many songs which could be their finale and it broke things up nicely.

Adversely I once watched Placebo stage an encore during a late afternoon festival slot. That was all a bit wrong.

I think it's because they think its fake and indulgent....and it is most of the time....what's the point in going off just so you can wait for the crowd to cheer to come back. Encores if they are real should be rare and spontaneous, not exactly what you expect.

3 pages in like an hour. Impressive.

I imagined it would have been because of the ego issues of leaving your best songs to an encore, which assumes that you'll be asked back. I just wondered if there had been some, shall we say official statement, in other words Nicky ranting. I do think it's indulgent for a band with, say, 10 songs to do an encore, but for a 20 something odd set it's probably ok to take a few minute breather, drink etc.
When did this disdain for the encore begin? Is it something they've always done? When did the James acoustic solo bit pop up?

And I'll definitely admit to being one of the confused after my first manics gig.

Reading back i do realise sounds like a 5 year old.

When The Cure go off after an hour and a half they're only half way through the gig, they'll always come back on at least twice and rarely play for less than three hours. I've always felt sorry for people in the crowd who don't know that, and subconsciously start to need a wee when they first go off.

At my first Manics gig I probably loitered for a few minutes until seeing that everyone was heading for the exit and the roadies were removing gear etc!

Remember seeing The Darkn**s (embarrassing) at NEC few years ago. Talk about indulging one's ego... There was a long gap between most songs as Just*n kept imploring the crowd to cheer louder & join in with the crappy handclapping / waving / lighters etc.
By the time the encore came around 90% of the crowd had had enough. For the first couple of minutes there was the usual whistling & footstomping which got less enthusiastic second-by-second with the result that by the time they came back on, the hall was virtually silent. It was worth the ticket price for that moment alone.

I'm so glad someone else said this Seems quite amusing they of all bands don't want to do something because it's 'self indulgent'.

The best encores are when the band takes requests, but I think I've only ever seen Idlewild do that. Oh and when The Killers did a second encore on the Sam's Town tour when I saw them at Nottingham Arena...I don't think people were expecting that, as a lot had already left

Ah, they just like to be different sometimes. I'd welcome encores if we get more songs and if the songs are less predictable. Let em get a couple of minutes rest, pint, drink, piss whatever. Convention doesn't have to be a bad thing.
