I agree we won't have to wait long. Once the inevitable TIMTTMY victory run is out of the way they'll be back in DTTR.

I do think they'll be a 'twist' to the next project it won't just be "another" album. Whether that means a collaboration with a famous producer, a back catalogue -cough -reimagining, a soundtrack / musical thing, a duets album or shudders a covers album.

A covers album is for bands with no ideas. Duets have been done already. No need for a whole album full

I think a This is my Truth 20th anniversary tour will be next on the cards and I wonder if the appearance of Horses Under Starlight on this tour might point towards a B-sides collection at some point in the near future as well.

In terms of original material and ideas, I don't know where they go from Resistance is Futile to be honest.

We already had Lipstick Traces... do you reckon they can pull off another B-sides collection?

We did get Judge Yr'Self out of it... that was pretty cool

As for what's next. TIMT Super Shoebox edition, Christmas gigs across Nov-Dec (starting in USA perhaps), then The Great Western 2: The Buffet Cart

*may involve some wishful thinking

RIF was the first album I couldn't quite predict since Lifeblood.

Big stadium rock album - Generation Against the Tigers
Angsty Richey album - Journal for Plagued Bibles
String-laden pop/rock - Postcards Must Go
Mellow, melancholic album - This is My Film Rewind Yours
Mix of angular guitar and more unusual experiments & electronic bits - Know Your Lifebloodology

Whereas RIF seems to be a mix of the pop/rock and weird/electronic ends of the band, which isn't what I was expecting. I reckon the next album will be a bit darker or angrier sounding, but otherwise it's harder to predict this time around.

edit: how about a proper concept album?

Lipstick Traces barely scratched the surface though and there has been a lot more decent stuff since then. They could do a follow up album to Lipstick Traces with the stuff since then (There By the Grace of God B sides onwards I guess) or do a comprehensive box set.

I recall seeing a video where James in particular said he would like to do some more with the B sides.

I just hope they do something less "produced" and more raw and heavy. But I guess the material (the lyrics) would have to call for that.

On the recent Big Weekend interview James said he wanted to write songs as they came, but Nicky had the final say in the concept. Many lesser bands would have split over such schisms.
I don't think the vocals on the next album will be as shouty as RIF. But no idea about the music. Predicting it's at least demoed by next Summer at latest.
But it's the Manics! None of us can really fucking know! But looking forward to the next one we'll obviously get. Just focusing on that one.
And got back into RIF, even DC after not listening to it for a few weeks. RIF really is a great Manics record of their Twilight Zone Rock Pop dimensions.
Just think if they were totally fearless they could have bought anything out and risked critical dismay and run out of contract with Record Company earlier!
