What do these lines mean exactly:

Only my interpretation but:
A reference to the miners strikes and impending unemployment of the miners meant they had to watch what they spend as it was the end of thier jobs!

Whilst we're on the subject of A Design For Life can anyone tell me what James was singing in the instrumental bit during this tour (certainly at SOuthampton, I don't know about any other dates)

I read somewhere (Everything?) that it referred to working class people being told by the government they needed to save and invest their money and that casual spending wasn't what the economy needed for recovery. Although I don't see how that can make sense.
