Vote for JDB's best solo!
I've been rediscovering my love of the Manics over the last few weeks with the rusty promo machine starting to be oiled up again with Wire's sweet hyperbole. I've also been rediscovering my love of playing guitar along with the band. So with the lack of electric guitar on RTF, this thread is a vote for Jimbo's best guitar solos. The reason I've put it into the general section rather than Manics' musicians section is that this should be for all people whether they play guitar or not. Brian May once said when talking about Bohemian Rhapsody that the best guitar solos are those that can be sung in the shower so this thread is for all Manics fan whether you know what a 'hammer on' or a 'pull off' is. Some of the guitarists on here might like certain scales or bends or phrases that Jimbo uses in some solos while the lay listeners might just like a solo cos its catchy or whistleable. Anyhow I want to start with 4 days for nominations and only 1 vote per person. The solos with the most nominations over that time will go into a 3 day poll and the winner will reign supreme. I think it would be cool to give a little blurb as to why you have chosen the solo you have chosen, or maybe what version of the solo do you prefer (the ME discussion may be very interesting on this!). Whatever - just give us something cos we're all nosey. So get nominating people! Only thing is remember a guitar solo and a guitar riff are two different things! So the main riff of Motorcycle is not the solo and can't be nominated, for example. EDIT: to say that only 10 things can be put in a forum poll so the 10 with the most votes will go in. If there is more than 1 solo with only 1 vote then it'll be whatever solo was voted for first that goes in. Last edited by Europa Gluten Free; 07-08-2013 at 11:35. |

Archives of Pain. It's powerful, ferocious and the increasing speed always gives me goose bumps.

Archives of Pain is too obvious. It's long but it sounds like someone making it up on the spot.
I vote for Donkeys, Roses in the Hospital, La Tristesse Durera (an inspired period perhaps?), A Song For Depature, All We Make is Entertainment, Imperial Bodybags, No Surface All Feeling.

Donkeys and The Love Of Richard Nixon - about the only listenable part of that song.

Motorcycle Emptiness, because as the thread asks JDB once DID sing it! But either way, this wins for being sad and euphoric all at once.

I'd agree with Nixon if it were an octave lower. I'll only be able to hear that solo for a few more years, and then that frequency will be gone...

one of my favourites is also one of the most simple of all - the single note bendy solo of 'masses...' - maybe because it was such a contrast to the previous couple years of overblown TIMT pomp.

I love Drug Drug Druggy but I'll go for La Tristesse.

Locust Valley is my pick - it's the one that gives me goosebumps.
Found That Soul, Valley Boy and Elvis Impersonator are close to being there.

Well,If I have to choose only one probably my vote will go for the one at the end of The Everlasting. That's strange as it's not one of my fav songs but that solo is the only reason why I listen to it.But I also think that the one in Faster is very effective thought it is short.I asked my hudband who is a guitar player(and the Manics are among the band/artist he likes).Obviously he doesn't know every single b-side but he seems to appreciate any song with a good solo or riff and he said Valley Boy.
