I had also totally forgotten about this until recently, though I was meant to go to two or three gigs on that European tour, one of them being Munich. If that happened now, there's no chance I'd ever forget it! Funny what the mind blanks out...

Ahh I remember this well....had tickets booked for Helsinki which took weeks to organise and it was to be my first time flying (I was a very late starter in that department).....I clearly remember finding out it was cancelled and reading the short statement that gave the excuse of working on the next album although the general consensus at the time was that it was connected to 9/11

....I did still go but instead of watching the manics spent that evening in a rather bizarre Tractor restaurant!

And does anyone remember why they cancelled some festivals in '99? I was stood on the front row of Werchter Festival (Belgium), when I heard it was cancelled- very last minute- and bloody Robbie Williams came onstage instead of the Manics. ("Let me entertain you", I'll never forget grrr).

Zetor! Quality tractor themed restaurant. I think there are 2 branches in Helsinki, but I've only ever been to one of them.

Lindz certainly does! She was also at this festival. When the announcement was made, it was in a language that she didn't understand, so when she asked a member of the festival staff to translate the announcement, she was told the band had split up. Cue a very upset Lindz.

I believe it was because James' mother was very ill. Same reason the N. American dates in July/August were postponed several months, until September.

I don't blame you, travelling all that way, only for the boys to cancel at the very last minute. Hope you didn't mind me posting about your Werchter nightmare.

I just read about this in the 'Nailed to History' book. Sean and Nicky had both acquired children in that year and it was 9/11 that year. Nicky used to be afraid of flying and obviously that didn't help, so they decided to cancel the tour.

I can't see the cancelation being anything to do with concerns about ticket sales, probably more to do with the various family stuff going on at the time.

I think they could've gotten away with one night at each venue at a stretch, two would've been a bit on the optimistic side. They'd been headlining festivals anyway and it wasn't that long since they'd been filling these kinda places. Not too arsed about seeing them in arenas again, been to some great venues over the past few years. I think 2000-3000 is about the best for atmopshere.

I don't believe it was cancelled because of 9/11 or flying, as they'd most probably have rolled round Europe in buses.

Surely I'm not the only one old enough to remember how battered and beat-down the boys were by the summer of 2001 when it started to sink in that KYE had lost all commercial and critical steam (this isn't a condemnation of KYE itself, just a statement of the Manics-climate at the time). I've always believed this was 100% why they aborted all of their plans for the second half of 2001 and distanced themselves in every way from what they'd been doing. They may carry themselves with a lot of confidence and bluster at times, but we all know how sensitive they can be...

I find it a bit daft that So Why So Sad was put out as the lead single but they haven't played it since the Forever Delayed tour. They're always distancing themselves from whatever their previous album happens to be whenever, it's getting silly now. I think I've already seen them twice since Journal For Plague Lovers without them even touching a track off it, and the last few gigs have been down to three Postcards From A Young Man tracks.

I absolutely love the band, but I'd hate to be in it. They're so full of doubt!
