sister albums ?
Have been thinking about this during the cricket so bare with me here.
If this has been covered before you have my apologies. The manics seem to have a certain symmetry with their albums, nearly every album has a sister Generation terrorists = know your enemy Gold against the soul ? Holy bible = journal for plague lovers Everything must go = send away the tigers / Postcards from a young man this is my truth tell me yours = lifeblood This theory seems to fall apart for gats and the emg triplets. It seems they may be sub consciously remaking the same albums what do you think have i got something here or should i have gone to bed a long time ago? Chris s xxx |

yeah, i've been up with our one year old watching cricket too, so bearing with you.
as tired as you, so also bear with me. GATS = Postcards. both came after "fan" loved albums (GT / JFPL for those of you who are not keeping up) and, for different reasons, sound like albums from a band trying to "establish themselves". EMG = SATT in regards of commercial success and indeed keeping the band alive. EMG was them "coming back" as a three piece; SATT was them "coming back" after apparently a possible split was a reality after the commercial shortcomings of LB.

Ah! I've pondered this sort of thing myself before, the arrangement looks agreeable to me (with starstruck's additional GATS -> PFAYM and EMG -> SATT), apart from I'm not sure about GT -> KYE, hmm...

GT = KYE
not in terms of quality or fan favourite songs, for sure, but in defence of slightly delayed both albums won the band a significant amount of fans and got them a great deal of press attention. you could argue a case that both albums "suffer" from some production issues to - what happened to the bass on GT, for instance, and KYE's "interesting" production has been discussed before. both are also a couple of tracks too long......

GT = KYE makes a bit of sense. I remember a lot of talk about going back to their roots while they were making KYE. That said, I also remember Nicky saying that Lifeblood was The Holy Bible for 30 year olds.

I would say that JFPL is more of a sister to GATS than THB. Ignore the chronology and listen to the sound.

@UEF - listen to the sound? done. it's ripped off SATT. so SATT, JFPL and PFAYM are sister albums and JFPL is the prettiest one.
I agree with KYE and GT, the idea of recording both albums was the same 'let's write as many songs as possible, record them all despite repeating ourselves all the time'

Personally I feel that:
GT, THB & JFPL should be grouped together EMG and Lifeblood GATS and SATT TIMY and Postcard ...with Know Your Enemy being a bit of an anomaly, though who knows 77 Songs of Fear and Hatred sounds possibly as inconsistent as KYE (I just hopes it's a bit better). I would define the eras in the same order as: Rebellion Catharsis Lost Wallowing But I'm mainly a fan of the first two eras listed so maybe other fans who love these albums might find a better description than Lost and Wallowing. |
