Yeah they have a lot of integrity, stuff they've done for charity etc. I do think though, and it goes for any band-adverts, reality tv, talent shows etc are a no go place credibility wise. Especially adverts.

Depends on the company using your song surely? It's just another way of getting your stuff heard.

I don't know, for me, unless it's amnesty international or similar it's always a no, but (as you may have guessed!) I'm a bit hardline and old fashioned about this.

depends on who owns the rights to the songs, mostly. as for most of the 80s he made even more money than he could spend we were saved from Michael Jackson selling The Beatles songs for adverts.

using an existing song to advertise your product is basically lazy, imagination-free advertising, isn't it?

well it's not just the song is it? It's the visuals that go with it. If your ad is boring to watch, the song isn't going to save it.

It is so so so plain to see they always wanted to be a mainstream band!
They wanted/want to sell records.
And I find it admirable that they ain't like loads of other rock 'stars' who preach world peace or anti poverty or other noble causes whilst coining it in! If theses bands meant what they say then they should donate the earnings from an album!
Why do the Manics have to have the same stance as other bands? Especially fucking Radiohead - who in case you haven't noticed piss me off with some of their self righteousness!
This. They are there to sell records at the end of the day. Unfortunately it did'nt work with the Strictly thing. Kelly Jones sang Handbags and Gladrags on there when their 'greatest Hits' was out and they sold another 10,000 that week and the album went from 30 back into the top 10, the same thing happened with Paloma Faith. It works for some and not for others, maybe if they had gone on when the National Treasures was out and sang The Everlasting they might have pulled some more sales.

A duet without the duet partner is a bit of an odd choice, isn't it? Ps. The funeral suits weren't exactly enticing, either.

You can't have your cake and eat it. Or to specific, you can't sell records to 'Mondeo drivers' after telling them you don't want them as part of your fan base to try and impress the indie crowd. They had everything they wanted and chose to throw it away.

You clearly love James even more than I do to rearrange reality in your head like that! Funeral suit, really!

This is very true, I've had so many discussions over the years with work mates about this, the saw this as a stuck up, snobby comment, looking down on where they come from. They will never see millions again as they don't appeal to the masses.
