I love Nixon, but on an album that was always going to be a difficult sell to fans due to its production, the fact they went and put out the one actual synthpop song - on which James doesn't even sound like James - as the lead single was utter fucking madness.

Singles aren't a market for them anymore, so it's mostly just a case of what might get some airplay on Radio 2 or daytime SixMusic, and Orwellian makes total sense in that area.

edit: literally managed to start a new page with the phrase "I love Nixon". Well done me.

Orwellian is the single bait that'll get played on your radio 2s and such like but it does that classic manics trick of coldcocking you with a somewhat gentle tune tied to lyrics where everything is fucked, it reminds me a lot of lifeblood in that sense. I say gentle tune but there is something off-kilter and discordant with the music which i hope there is more of on the album.

A Short Interlude From Me To You

With the usual new-release boost to visits and lots of old familiar names, an alternate and personal message to you all in the context (and ideally to the tune, if you like) of the new song, and where we are and… well I think it speaks for itself… (long live FD, long live forums!)

We live in
A whale of a time
It feels *quite* possible
We’re left behind

Following crowds
That tick and like
Safe spaces gone
Sponsored to die

Everyday I post: silly stuff like this
Are forums now the past? But shall we reminisce?
I’ll walk you through the a-Porco-lypse
Where cheesy puns and gags exist

Everyday I post: silly stuff like this
If forums ever pass they’re something I would miss
Social media sucks, streaming isn’t bliss…
I’ll walk you through the a-Porco-lypse

We live in
One feed at a time
A sad slow sunset
Threads of decline

A cartoon avatar
Or verified rock star
I ‘ultra vivid’ lament
Digital homes we loved

Everyday I post: heartfelt words like this
Will forums survive? Let’s hope they can persist
I’ll walk you through the a-Porco-lypse
Where I can feel more ‘me’ than this

Everyday I read: lots of fellow fans
With far more words to say, from critics to the stans
I loved you all, as sparse as this place is
I’ll walk you through the a-Porco-lypse

Every time I post, daft or serious
A forum was escape, not ads-for-contact-lists
I’ll walk you through the a-Porco-lypse
I sigh Forever for what might drift

Everyone on here: whichever it is
If forums ever die, I blow you all a kiss
‘Thank you for the music’, and the comradeship…
I’ll walk you through the a-Porco-lypse

I mean almost certainly the latter, but now that I've had the idea I desperately want to see James sat at a piano every night
This could potentially replace the mid show JDB solo acoustic section.

Great. Now I can’t help hearing a-Porco-lypse whenever I listen to it

£18.70 shipping for a CD to Dublin 🤪. Looks like I’ll have to live without the bonus scribbles

I'm getting confused with the album title "The Ultra Vivid Lament" and former 4AD band from the late 80's Ultra Vivid Scene. Very close to each other. I wonder if the title is a nod to the band in some way. Probably not.

Actually works really well as a punk pop thing. Better even. Having listened to it a dozen times now, I think from an objective viewpoint it’s certainly an above average post 2000s Manics single/album opener whatever - improved further by its unashamedly du jour political lyrics. Which are surprisingly rare these days with Manics singles. If we can’t have proper rock/punk guitars I’m glad they’ve at least done away with the big anthemic stuff rock concert sound of the last album. Not what I was expecting production wise, but I like it.

JDB said on the radio it was a reflection directly on the coronavirus lockdown - having a lot of freedoms taken away from you and having some of the simplest pleasures under your nose.

Yep, that's really good. Still not sure about the piano bit at the start, but really like the guitar sound as the song goes on.

I was surprised the tangent the lyrics took. I was expecting the title to refer to surveillance capitalism. Or failing that, the debate on limits of free speech which has, righty or wrongly, seen stuff like the leader of the world's strongest democracy getting silenced and cancel culture etc. Instead seems it's just about conflicting narratives and being unable to trust what you read. Important sure, but it's a problem as old as human history.
