A question About The Formation Of MSP?

I'm new to the band in detail really.

I just wondered if it has been stated why when Richey joined Nicky moved to bass?

Was Richey all ready learning guitar? Was Nicky decent on bass already?

I'm Richey was intelligent enough to learn bass.

Nicky moved to bass because MSP's original bass player, Flicker, quit. This was before Richey joined the band. Originally, Richey was MSP's photographer and driver, and wasn't in the band as a performer at all.

We felt the need that he should join the band, really. We were the ones that said "Get the guitar. We'll teach you how to play."
Sean Moore, 2005.

Ah right.

I knew Miles left because of musically differences. I just thought because Richey was around the band he replaced him straight away.

I've has read that in the early years Richey's guitar wasn't plugged in and he mimed playing the guitar.

Obviously Richey's talent was elsewhere, lyrics and the way he marketed(for the want of a better word) the band.

No it wasnt plugged in at all in the early days i believe, but there are a couple of videos on youtube from around 94 where you can quite clearly hear it. Glastonbury in particular is a good example.

If you listen to the Reading '92 clips (Suicide is Painless, YLA, MJ) on YouTube you can clearly hear his playing. It's more sloppy than truly bad.

You can hear him during that Astoria 1992 gig when James stops playing, I reckon he was just turned down extremely low in the mix.

Apparently Nicky taught James his first guitar chord. I've not got a musical bone in my body but I'd assume that there isn't a great deal of difference between playing guitar and playing bass, if anything bass being easier with less strings..?

It certainly takes a type of intelligence to be a decent musician but I'm not sure that was the type of intelligence Richey had

As a bass and guitar player... I can tell you that after trying to learn guitar, I swapped to bass, learned my skills on that, then went back to guitar with a much better grounding. Bass = fewer strings on the instrument, plus fewer strings being played at any one time (not much need for chords).

If we're talking MSP though... the basslines are MUCH easier to grapple with than the guitar lines. James' solos can be very fast and tricky. Nicky's basslines... well, are not.

Full on comedy gold! James around 0.30 looks like he's thinking "Aww shit, shit, they've got the levels wrong!". Sean thinks it's hilarious and at the line about "Postcards" James nervously looks to his right to make eye contact with Nicky.
I think this video should be played to all people who register with this site!
