Yeah, I'm not sure why they've turned into a six piece gig lineup now. If you played me a Motorcycle Emptiness or A Design For Life or whatever played as a four piece, five piece, or six piece I think the only way I'd be able to tell the difference is through James' vocals. But that's just me, don't have the greatest ears meself. I don't play guitar either, so I don't know if it'd be more exhausting now for James to do a 22ish song set where he's doing all the guitar on his own, like he used to. I don't know how beneficial the rests he's getting now that he wasn't before are to him.
Still, I don't mind really. Thinking about it, I've seen em as a three piece I think six times, without Murray, Naysmith or Reed and it's been noticeably rawer. The King Tuts and Rough Trade Futurology/Holy Bible gigs are probably both top 5 for me. I love James but sometimes I wish he wasn't such a professional. I want to see him pissed, jumping around, fucking up and having fun. Same goes for both James and Nicky, doing Garageland and No Feelings, they looked like that was the most fun they'd had performing for years. Hope that has some bearing on the next album..

I personally don't mind Wayne as a backing guitarist, the backing vocals I can do without. It's not a knock at his voice or ability, it's just not suited to Manics songs. I actually really like his work with Boy Cried Wolf and Thirteen:13.
Gavin I thought was brilliant when it came to the trumpet not I really don't see the point in the extra guitar. I can't hear it and really at Leeds from where I was standing I couldn't even see him. If they are going to any musicians then should be for something that isn't already there. All this said the best Manics gig I've been to in the last several years would have to be James solo show in Sheffield last year. |

But I agree with the sentiment. I was lucky enough to see the Rough Trade gig and it was incredible. Edit: My mistake. On closer inspection I think it's a guitar tech getting the guitar tuned up in time for Tolerate. Last edited by starfucker; 14-06-2018 at 19:58. |

They all seem to have been good friends for some years now, doesn't Wayne share a management and I believe his taste for women's tennis player's shirts played a role in winning Nicky's heart so.... Their back catalogue's grown over the years (weird ha) and there's a lot of variation between the songs over the years, as y'say some not really possible to play as a 3 piece, many bands change line-ups engage session musicians....sure they don't take such centre stage but this is the Manics and they're clearly all mates not just hired help.....they're not precious....I don't see the reasons for knicker twisting - generally speaking not necessarily yours Porco....and y'really couldn't ask for a better frontman than James...when he pulls up a rocking chair as Wayne takes over the mic and rocks and knits their balaclavas I'll worry Now that is a point...maybe that is an age thing....don't wanna look like you're next up on Blackpool Pier

I hit upon this last night, it's by a different band but I think illustrates what's going on with the Manics live sound.
The song 'Buddy Holly' by the band 'Weezer' - which will be instantly recognisable to anyone who owned a Windows 95 CD in the 90s. Here they are playing it with full synths and samples in 2018: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7LsX1N2Bc4 The same group and song, in 1996: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30Wa3QI8NHk This is probably a matter of taste but I think the live song is enhanced by a need to 'make do' with limited live instruments. Which of the two clips do you prefer?

Absolutely the 1996 version. That synth is awful.

I watched Isle of Wight last week and have to say - disappointed again.... May as well make Wayne lead guitarist.

I've said this before, but I wouldn't mind so much if it actually filled out the sound more and made a difference, but the keyboards still over-power so much - where's the palm muted guitar in the verses of International Blue? All you can hear is that bloody organ!

That excellent interview in Guitarist magazine makes in clear how enthusiastic JDB is about the recording process. There are tons of different guitars on each track on RIF which theyve spent time obsessing over so, rightly or wrongly, it looks like they want to use Fitzjohn to try and recreate that since hes there.

This is a weird one because I totally see both sides of it.
I've said it before but the vast majority of folks in their 50's are lucky to be bounding around a garden centre, let alone Wembley arena. I think it's fair to say that, heading into their 50's, there could be the odd physical limitation we don't know about. Obviously I wouldn't be unhappy if Jimmy was jumping around the stage like a late 20 something but it isn't 1996 anymore. Anyway, that's what YouTube is for. If you prefer 1996/1999/2004 or whatever get in the time machine. That said, I do appreciate that when you see the Manics, you want to see James wielding his axe. The issue with the Manics sound back in the 90's was that (especially on solos) it could be a bit empty. I can certainly see the argument that the lead guitarist should dominate the playing, and the backing player would come in to give power to his sound, not the other way around. But on balance, I think I land in favour of Delegation Street Preachers. Things change, and the idea that everything has to be a certain way goes out of the window after a certain age. If you play the same songs hundreds and hundreds of times, it does need freshening up once in a while. And I think what we see here is simply the fact that James isn't as precious as he once was. I'd probably nudge it back in favour of him playing stuff like the start of Design and YSTS. maybe he'll get as bored of not playing those parts as he did with playing them in the first place.

Might be the next gig if you keep on about how knackered he's looking Has there been a question asking whether these 2 have ever been seen on the same stage at the same time?
