Last try at 'Mass Communication'

I guess this is just a polite way of saying it's the last album on Sony, as it ends the ten year deal. Couldn't find the thread talking about it on search, if there is one, please merge!

Nicky mentioned in the interview on manics.co.uk that they have re-signed with Columbia, a division of Sony.

Aye they have a "new deal" which probably means after this album....another Best Of will be brought out and then that's it. I said a few years ago the band will make 3 more albums. I think I said that after SATT. So after this album they've got one more in them before they bring the curtain down on the band.
Hopefully the album has a lot of big potential singles on it but if the lead single was picked purely on the strength of being the most catchy and best song then...this album won't be do much for the masses in my opinion.

They have got 2 more albums after this.

A Sony UK Tweet in 2008 basically said:

'We have resigned 3 massive Bands for a further 3 albums each'

I thought we already chewed this one fully back when Wire first said it, then went back and elaborated on it?

Basically, it's their last shot at trying to become massive again. If it fails, they'll just go on to do whatever it is they like doing but which they don't feel works with their hit-seeking agenda (considering Wire has said that JFPL was a stylistic sidetrack, I guess we'd be seeing musical progress from that). If it succeeds then, well, I dunno - continue making big stuff?

In any case it's got nothing to do with labels or, as some might still think, the band calling it a day.

You think they've resigned just for a Best Of album? I personally think they have more artistic aspirations, and we'll see a different Manics after this album, perhaps less media-friendly and with more peculiar projects.

Possibly. I know I felt very much the same when they were set to release YLAINE and im certain I wasn't the only one.

last album for Sony was JFPL. PFAYM is a new Sony deal, like it was said before.

I think this album will be a bit commercial, then they'll make more 'artistic stuff', some punky/post rock/psychodelic experiments and then around the 14th album we'll get another pop/rock album.
