New Art Riot Appreciation

After all of these years being a Manics fan, especially since Tigers era when I really began getting all of the albums and seeking out B Sides, New Art Riot eluded me. I had never had a great desire to get it, even though I really enjoyed Strip it Down from Lipstick Traces. Recently finally got around to listening and I have to say I loved it!

Its Clash like, sure, but all four songs I have to say are very catchy, with some fine riffs, melodies and some strong lyrics among the obvious sloganeering. Raw, rocking and to me, a vibrant piece of work. James' vocals nothing like the powerful and emotive singer he would become but the guitar playing, as always, is terrific. All four are dynamic and I would love to hear them live.

Now to get UK Channel Boredom, the only other early official Manics release I have yet to obtain.

Viva New Art Riot!

Terrorism is an excuse that the ruling class use,
Wipe out aristocracy now kill, kill, kill, kill, kill,

Think @seanmooremanic said it was naive; I don't think so.

I love the New Art Riot EP - it's a nice warm up to Motown Junk.
Then there's that great version of New Art Riot from the Faster single...

My three favourite memories of the EP

1) Stumbling onto it in a record store during the naïve early days of my Manics mania, thinking I had discovered a super rare early EP. Obviously not the case as I came to find out only a short while later (it was the common CD re-release) but it was still a giddy fan moment.

2) During long trips I like to turn on album shuffle on my iPod and just enjoy my collection. It was about 2am in Helsinki airport, I'm drinking coffee and waiting for my late night coach to arrive, enjoying an 20+ minute ambient track that really underlines the mood and atmosphere where I was at the time, when it suddenly stops and is immediately replaced by the ramshackle guitars of New Art Riot. It snapped me out of my lull and I had a travel-weary giggle.

3) The Strip It Down video

It's a fun little EP. More amusing at points than genuinely good but that doesn't really matter, it's entertaining nonetheless.

Yep, experienced both of these situations (well, not Helsinki airport at 2am specifically).

The latter stills catches me out all the time. It's like getting a cymbal clash to the head.
