Ifwhiteamerica: Moral Majority

I've been getting into Dead Kennedys lately and they've got the song called Moral Majority. previously I thought it's just a phrase, but I googled it to get the lyrics and discovered that Moral Majority was the American christian fundamental organisation in the '70-'80.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_majority

it was lobbying a lot that times (Reagan was the president) and got a lot of support, it had around 110thousands members and over 7 million of supporters. I read that Ted Kennedy was a member of it too.

to be honest the lyrics of Ifwhiteamerica are much more clearer to me now.
I've been only wondering if the Manics got inspired directly from Dead Kennedys, they knew about this song, have they pointed it anywhere, in interviews? does anyone know about it?

'Moral majority' is a pretty well-known phrase across the English-speaking world, meaning something close to religious right or puritanism or whatever: I was familiar with it long before I knew it was the name of a specific organisation. I'm guessing the Manics were just using it in this general sense: they may have heard the Dead Kennedys song but I don't think they'd need that kind of specific inspiration for the use of the phrase in Ifwhiteamerica...

Was also referenced pretty prominently in Green Day's 'Minority'

From the sounds of that wiki article, it may have arisen from that group, but now its general definition would refer to a group of people who want stricter morals etc....

Such as saying the moral majority or the right wing are outraged by something that is a result of being too liberal...

the lyric in Ifwhiteamerica is definitely a reference to the US religious group. They're quite interesting - lots of squabbling in 1970s US evangelicalism.

If you were interested in music in the 80s and 90s these kind of groups were on your radar due to some albums getting warning labels which then lead to big stores such a walmart refusing to stock certain records.

Yeah, I must admit, when I found out I was very surprised. He never talks about it or anything... Weird.
