When JDB saw The Libertines...

This may be a common anecdote? but still thought it was worth posting...

Was just reading 'The Libertines: Bound Together' and was surprised to see a couple of Manics mentions in the first few chapters, this Carl quote was particularly amusing though, looking back on a gig in Bristol where the Libs opened for The Vines:

"Bristol Louisiana was the gig where James Dean Bradfield came up to us and told me he loved the gig - he was quite animated for a small bloke. I was really pleased. And he finished by saying "Yeah, you Vines were great." After all that praise, he thought I was in The Vines. I was gutted."

I saw them on that tour at Oxford. Libertines were awful, Vines were OK.

Ahh, I remember reading that! (The Libertines were probably my most major -fandom-interest- thus far, just below the madness that has transpired with me and the Manics ) I don't think I was that familiar with the Manics at the time, maybe I'd just heard THB and EMG at that point - strange to think of a time without them now.

Was just thinking, didn't James stalk The Vines for a while? And there he was getting a Libertine mixed up with a, er, Vine! I loved The Vines first album, still think it's ace but they lost their way after.

Their other albums are great too, if less commercial, but yeah the hype, insane touring and copious weed it afforded really exacerbated Craig's aspergers. When Pat left the band lost its heart though.

Personally I think Carl should've been extremely flattered to have been mistaken for someone not in The Libertines.

I remember when people were making a lot of noise about the Libertines and hailing them as the saviours of music. It was around the time "Can't Stand Me Now" came out and in my head I somehow imagined it would be as good as Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" - it wasn't.

I can imagine James being very animated! Bless him! I remember when the NME mentioned him every week for about a month and it always seemed to be in connection with The Vines!

Garrggh, I was at the Vines Bristol show later that year. I'd have loved to have seen this small, animated man.
