The Holy Bible production
I've been wondering what are the typical aspects of what created the overall sound of The Holy Bible, musically and production wise. Is it the reverb of that tiny studio in Cardiff? Flanging guitars? Samples? What kind of mics they used? There's so little info on these things that it would be nice to have it all in one place.

Guitar wise there seems to be a fair amount of chorus and tremolo used if that helps... (You'll hear them most obviously on This Is Yesterday, Revol...)

Lots of factors play a part in the overall sound of an album. It's probably worth noting that the band had been influenced by In Utero and its claustrophobic sound. The studio in Cardiff was small and therefore didn't give them the chance to create a "big room" like they did on Gold Against the Soul. So the recording is quite natural. This is more obvious when you listen to the bells and whistles added to the Canadian/US mix. The original is very dry and without much of the heavy production work heard on their other albums. In part, that is why there isn't a named producer, although Alex Silva produced it alongside the band. All the samples were from cassettes if I remember from an interview I read, just played onto the tapes as they recorded.

I find this quite interesting "when they first came to the studio, they were planning on The Holy Bible being a mini-album, 6 tracks or so." He does go on to say the band don't remember that but they have alway been prone to revising their history Last edited by andy; 28-03-2016 at 18:40.

That's the one I meant. They interviewed Steve Brown as well, which was really interesting. Probably got Mike Hedges and Dave Eringa too!
