Nah, would've been even better if they'd put some white noise over the top instead of the guitar.

Just listened to this. It's good to hear them experimenting a bit musically but it's not very satisfying overall. Still, do love the wry delivery of the line "I feel as useless..... As a VHS".

I love it, but I can see why it didn't make the MOR record.
It would have made a good album title "Engage with your shadow". Sounds pretty cool. |

the accompanying photo on youtube, however, is perfect.

At least the Manics are still able to divide opinion!

Can't be bothered finding the other b-side thread but Time Aint Nothin sounds like Nicky singing over the top of I Think I Found It with The Bluebells helping out in the background! Like the tweaky guitar bit by James in the middle!

The Passing Show - ok. Nicky's finest vocal moment is still Lady Lazarus for me! Shame we can't have instrumental versions of the Nicky sung b-sides!

James should just sing all the songs that Nicky has ever sung. It's only fair that we get the chance to compare!

Nicky does sound a bit like a deeper voiced version of Genesis P Orridge on this. Maybe they should do a version of United as a B side soon too.

'Engage With Your Shadow' is great and makes me hope for a follow up to 'I Killed The Zeitgeist', which is one of my favourite Manics-related albums.
Can't understand the hatred for the track - it's unusual for the Manics but it's hardly way out there, and all the comments about it giving people a headache and making them want to vomit...I mean, honestly, get out more. Favourite b-side from the 'Postcards' single is 'Midnight Sun' though, which has grown and grown and grown on me. They're a great band now, but what a band they were in 2001. I suppose I'm lucky. I like music that's beautiful (i.e. the best of the 'Postcards' album) and music that's ugly ('EWYS') and don't feel the need to chose between them. Oh, and to all the haters moaning about how 'EWYS' is negative about internet culture - the first words of the title are 'Engage With' not 'Reject'. |
