Impressions from the sideline

So the European tour dates are over. From the comfort of my home and YouTube I came to be pleasantly surprised by this tour. The shows were getting big crowd numbers in. More than I expected I had looked at the clips on YouTube and thought they were playing to 300 people until realising that of course when you are at the front of the gig filming you can see the rest of the audience. It sounds like they were pulling the fans in. Metaphorically, not literally. A absence from Europe only makes the fans appreciate the band more. No new songs, but this tour wasn’t for that. It was “National Treasures”.

I loved getting Nicky’s tweets sent to my phone. That made me feel very connected and valued. It’s a nice way to keep up the contact with fans and it really fits well with the nature of the band. I did think that there was as certain sadness in those tweets. Nicky wanting to keep on touring, but realising that no, that isn’t going to happen like it used to. That many of these cities might never be visited by the band again, but only as a solo traveller (or family traveller). There just seems to be that recognition that yes the band are walking to their autumn years. The self fulfilling prophecy of the end. But autumn can be a tempestuous season and I’m sure the band will produce some of their best work. They have nothing to prove to anyone. Only themselves. They don’t need to court the media and press.

So now it’s onto Japan before coming back home to hopefully write a few more songs. I guess none of us know if any new songs have been written. We’re only up to the end of the first quarter of their two year break, so there’s a long way to go.

Despite the fact that your post has terribly depressed me this morning , a small anecdote. In Hamburg, James told of a new record, of some songs already/on the verge of being recorded (two weeks ago, my memory is terrible) and went on about the fact they wanted to record some songs in Hamburg, and ended up by telling us that there will be a chance to see him in Hamburg bars next year. Still hope !!!!!!

Dear Librarian On Fire, if you were watching the gigs from the front row not the sideline your message would sound completely different.

Is this thread necessary? I can't really say I was eagerly awaiting to hear people's reaction to youtube.

Is your post necessary? Is any thread necessary? This is a messageboard, this is how it works.

Seconded. Nice thread in fact: not everyone had the opportunity to see the band this tour.

I agree, the OP's post was quite refreshing and an interesting point of view. NIce to see something different from either outright praise or damning criticism!

What can I say? I had a blast. As a fan from Europe I felt very privileged to be able to see them 5 times in less than one year time.
