Postcards From A Young Man Deluxe DVD

Just a quick question for any of those who own this... what exactly is in the Making Of doc?

I'm mainly interested in just seeing the recording process (ie picking amps, playing parts in, writing and recording strings parts etc) like on the Journal For Plague Lovers doc they released.

Do you reckon it would be worth buying a 2nd hand copy? Also, how long is it by the way?

Thankyou for any replies in advance!

Its quite similar to to the JFPL making of. Lots of Nicky in the studio filming with a camcorder.

Cute stuff. Of all the material wasted on the awful production choices on PFAYM, Some Kind of Nothingness feels most tragic to me. The songwriting on that song is amazing. If you just take it as melody/lyrics and sing it to, say, the string arrangement alone -- it's some of the strongest stuff they've done in the last 10 years. A beautifully clear song about death.

And then there's the stylistic choices they made in recording it. The awful gospel choir, the stupid, basic drums and the daytime tv vibe of the guitar rubbing against the strings...

Still! All that I could live with. But it's the mismatched duet vocals that finally do it in. Either one could sing it amazingly, JDB or Ian McCulloch, but 1) their voices are a total stylistic mismatch 2) the song is simply not a duet, there's absolutely no dialogue there.

It's a shame they're not a band who re-record old songs. This recorded in the vain of All Alone Here, with icy guitars and minimal drums... yum...
