This is entirely untrue. The human psyche can handle it perfectly well if the meeting takes place between the artist and someone who isn't a complete dick. I've had the pleasure to meet a few, not many, of the people who I truly admire in entertainment, and it was simply a case of saying hello, thanking them for the hard work and wishing them a good day.

I met Nick Cave last week, as he visited one of my places of work, and I simply shook his hand, told him Janglin' Jack was a favourite of mine and thanked him. The response was cordial and polite, which is fine by me. The same occurred when I met Nicky Wire, to the degree that he felt comfortable enough to have a conversation about Wales, my haircut and Send Away The Tigers. There is no sense of having perceptions shattered, or of it being a disappointment, if you don't set it up to be. That is why I'm pleased that for most encounters I've had with these sorts of people, it's been entirely accidental. I think the environment of signings and the like is bad for a fan, because you're positioned in such a way that you have to present yourself to the artist in a certain manner, and their response to you will be dictated by that, and the fact they're doing it to a line of a hundred or so other people.

Point being, is that they're no more special than anyone else on the street, but their cultural status might suggest so, in which case you have to approach that with some levity.

that's totally different from the reading the forum though. Meeting your fans is one thing. Listening to your fans moaning about 90% of what you do is probably not the best thing for a band to be doing.

Oh without question, I think that a far too open-mouthed approach is taken by some "fans" regarding people they apparently admire. That is the internet I'm afraid, what was once confined to fanzines and private conversation is now in a far more public arena, which can be dangerous, both positively and negatively. To be fair though, any unfair or below the belt criticism an artist might receive would usually say more about the person offering it than anyone else.

I like to try and remain candid without being offensive when discussing anything online, within reason, as I feel that conduct should be the same there as in any other location. I have certainly read some rather distasteful things here over the last coupe of years, which I often decide not to engage with.
