You're probably right, did they even exist?

This is lame. You can't compare the two campaigns. Regards saying the Manics are more successful than Rage in the UK - RATM have slowly increased their following since they first split (Kerrang, word of mouth etc.) and are more popular today by a huge margin than the Manics. If Rage had permitted their Reading 08 performance to be filmed by the BBC you would understand, by then comparing it to the Manics not even being able to fill the Radio 1 tent on the saturday night...

If Rage were to release a new album, even before or without the Xmas campaign I'm sure it would top the charts. Then of course we all know the reasons for the Xmas campaign and why KITN was chosen...

Don't waste your 29/79/99p

1. It's a Sony record. No one's going to want to give them any more money right now.

2. In fact, after buying all those multiple copies of KITN, even the most noisy of armchair anarchists won't be spending any further money downloading something to affect a chart that no one cares about.

3. Portions of the public hate the Manics more than Simon Cowell.

4. So you're left with Manics fans. No, scratch that, a minority of Manics fans on this board.

5. The song says nothing and has no worthwhile cause attached to it.

6. The Manics, unlike Rage, still have an ongoing recording career. They don't need this and it's their wish to step away from the spotlight while they go about putting together their next album.

7. Fans of bands have been doing this ever since the download rule was introduced. 99.9% fall flat on their face.

8. The KITN campaign itself was and remains so ideologically flawed that the list for this one could go on for longer than I can be bothered to go on.

Surely it would be symmetry if it was the last #1 of this decade, not the first #1 of the next.

And purely from a working in indie/rock/alt disco environment I would say KITN is way more popular than even the most popular Manics songs (which doesn't, sadly, include MATC).
