Oh, and on a pettier point:

"Tonight we beg the question". I know it has its place in common usage, but it grates on me. I actually wish I didn't know it was wrong. So perhaps don't click this:

The whole lyric's pretty much just rubbish. Using the word 'freaks' is okay for a teenage old emo band with a bit of a Marilyn Manson obsession. Coming from Nicky when he was in his late thirties it just sounded crap, as if he was trying to do his own version of something like Suede's Beautiful Ones, except badly and ten years too late.
Hmm... I can see why you'd feel like that I suppose, I just don't associate the word with those kind of things.

Dr. Porco recommends the excellent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freaks to cure you of your dislike of the term due to more recent associations.

I kind of agree with Porco re: A billion balconies.
I love the song.
However to if I were to push Mr Wire further it would be to state that communicating via the internet is just an extension of a phone call yet cheaper!
I for one will always embrace new technology, as it is clearly here to stay.
It seems to me that technological advances go hand in hand with Human Evolution.

I think Nicky is trying to say that we have maybe lost the personal touch (hence the concept-if there is one- of the album being based around old Postcards etc) but at time he stretches the point to far.
Maybe we should just look at the album as a love letter to the past? That is how I hear it anyway

Yeah, and it's worse because it's from Richey. On a similar note, James has trouble with differentiating between singular and plural terms. Most recent example: 'These things I've see brings tears to my eyes'. (Unless I've been getting such basic rules wrong all these years.)

Billion Balconies. Good god, Billion Balconies. Porco already mentioned the ridiculous notion of a self-professed Mr "what this tek-noo-loo-gee thing you keep mentioning?" not only writing a song about central modern-day technology but also going on to criticise it. Add to that the message the song seems to convey: "by consuming what surely is only boredom everyday our egos inflate and thus we can freely throw around hate everywhere because there's no consequences but in reality we're sad, lost creatures trapped in the lies of technology". Basically, what?

It looks like a petty retort of a person who looked at an internet forum and found people disagreeing with some things they had done. Which is really, really cringy as an idea.

Plus the fact that it's married to this big call-to-arms rocker anthem just makes it sound even pettier.

And naturally, because I post on the internet disagreeing with a song that lashes out at people posting in the internet, I automatically enable the possibility of the author being able to point fingers at me and going "TOLD YOU SO".

Re: Underdogs. If we're looking at lyrical dodginess there, I wouldn't go for the 'freaks' thing. Sure it's a bit of an awkward choice of words, but the real dodgy moment of the song comes when a love letter for the fans contains "people like you need to fuck people like me". Okay. Although TBH the main crime of that song continues to be the edit that must not be mentioned.

Yes, I agree with all that. I could see how one might construct an argument to say 'the ending of the song demonstrates a brash, some might say 'freakish' manner of expressing the point that the world needs 'freaks' and that the band welcome the attention of people who would identify themselves as such', but I think it sounds a bit forced, whereas I think the rest of the song's lyrics seem more heartfelt to me.

Must. Not. Mention. The. Edi-- *ahem*.

Another personal petty one: 4, as in '4ever' etc. Why? Or should I ask Y? I think the usage of '4' instead of 'for' in the notorious '4 REAL' incident is understandable enough, but I could do without it in '4ever Delayed' or 'The Future Has Been Here 4 Ever' etc.

OK, I think I have said enough in this thread for a while now.

So are there any other parts of Manics' songs that you don't feel particularly happy about, i.e. offensive or making you feel awkward?

For me, it's the line 'pointless jobs lead to pointless lives', in an otherwise great song. It just seems a little unfair, that they are three talented and loved musicians, who don't have to work 'pointless jobs' like th erest of us with 'pointless lives'. It just seems a little out of touch to my mind.
I'd always interpretated the 'entertainment' jobs as the 'pointless' ones, I thought they were denigrating themselves. Whoops.

I'd hazard a guess that the continued use of 4 is a throwback to the 4 Real thing; Manics lore referencing, if you will.

The anger about Balconies I find a bit OTT. For me, I don't think the song is saying 'Do not use the internet, EVER!'. I think it is just saying keep technology in it's place.

Think I agree here. My take is that they're not moaning at the internet itself, more that it has become a time waster for many people. I mean, my niece spends HOURS on Facebook, ultimately spouting a load of crap that doesn't need to be mentioned to anybody whatsover. "Mmm...pie for tea". Thanks for sharing that with us. Is it this that Nicky is getting at, rather than people using the internet to read the news etc?
