I concur as regards the production, that crass faux Spector-ness at times is so overbearing and the drums, on the title track in particular, are infuriating and near unlistenable.

EMG is an immense achievement from start to finish, anyone who criticises it should get their head checked

As some of you have pointed out, the title of the album says it all.
It was their big return on scene, therefore it's both more logical and more natural to turn to a more positive sound. Speaking of it, I like how the sound of the Manics' albums faithfully follows the concept sometimes. Also, you shouldn't only compare the Bible and Everything and stop there. You should take into account how the albums before and after these two sound. Look, right after Everything, there is Truth. And then Enemy. Now explain the difference between these!

I like the production, it's not too clean like Truth and James's' voice isn't too high in the mix, like Truth.
It is quite an unusual sound though for a band who, at the time, were criticised by many for supposedly going a bit commercial. Very little commercial about it. A masterpiece surely! |

I’d love to see them do a whole EMG set, there’s a lot of quality stuff off there that they infrequently touch on live. |

It would be nice to hear the whole thing live and see how it's aged. I only find interiors a weak link. Think it suffered from over exposure at the time so people don't like it as much because it aimed for popularity. But each to their own I guess.

It's a brilliant album.
It would work well live. And I love Interiors (hence my username) |

1996? They didn't play any in 1995, surely?

My memory might not be all it should be seeing as I was 11 at the time of EMG's release, but I don't remember Britpop/indie at that point being the string soaked thing it had become by 1998-99, and I'd actually hazard the suggestion that EMG was a large part of the reason for indie-strings rather than joining in an existing trend. Certainly it pre-dates the other obvious indie-string big tune, 'Bittersweet Symphony'.
Much as the THB show blew me away, actually I'd be even more excited by an EMG set as I like that album more (while accepting that objectively THB is a better album).

Interiors is one of their best songs ever. It's not as good as Further Away, though.

Interiors is brilliant because it's so weird. Those odd, stabby guitar chords kind of set it apart. Plus the pre-chorus and chorus are just such a build up.
Further Away is cool too - but why did it get single status in Japan and nowhere else?

"Further Away" is good, but not as good as "Elvis Impersonator" though.

Isn't Interiors just a St Etienne song with a new chorus? Still great!
I don't think they'd recorded anything for EMG before Richey disappeared - they had written the music for the Richey-penned songs, as James played Kevin Carter and Small Black Flowers on acoustic to him and they also said that they would not use any other lyrics that Richey had left if he had not heard the planned music backing. I'm sure the 'Richey plays guitar on the outro of ASNF' is a myth.

I'd probably be more delighted to suddenly hear Interiors and Further Away live than any of the other 'obscurities' (in a very loose sense) / Holy Bible songs people on here have been clamouring for for years.
