By the stadium? Great memories of drinking in there before going to see Arsenal beat Chelsea in the FA Cup final. Nearly ten years ago now, blimey!

The Vulcan has always been very quiet when I've been in- you tend to get the same few regulars.
The City Arms was re-furbished a while back. Not sure James would agree but I think its better than it was, lots of real ales etc and its a really cosy pub. |

Presumably I'm not the only one who noticed this, but for anyone who hasn't, that article was made up of excerpts from a book: The Search for the Perfect Pub: Looking For the Moon Under Water
by Paul Moody, Robin Turner. The full thing can be read on Amazon Look Inside!, including James's contribution, which goes on for over four pages. Most interesting bits are about the pub where his mother drank, The Plugh in Pontlanfraith, the ordinariness of which he found disappointing as a kid, and the importance of smoking in his vision of the ideal pub, he starts clutching at straws a bit regarding the supposed hypocrisy of banning smoking and heavily taxing beer, while not taxing stuff like foie gras and cheeses...

Pubs are better without smoking, honestly James!

Pubs fucking stank when you could smoke in them.
I went to Brussels a couple of weeks ago, and as a contact lens wearer, was quickly reminded of the days when my eyes would dry out and I'd eventually become unable to see. Oh and stink of smoke. Reminisce all you like, those days were shit and future societies will look back on us and wonder why we ever allowed smoking at all.

Pubs should have a 'smoke' room for smokers, banning smoking has helped kill the 'old fashioned' pub trade along with the demise of Industry.

The 'smoke room for smokers' would end up just like smoking tables in restaurants used to - all the non-smoking friends grin and bear it because the one or two Fagash Lils in the group simply can't go for any length of time without their fags.

Pubs have gone because beer makes no profit, and businesses need to make money...Food and soft drinks are what makes money, hence the chance to most pubs...although actually i seem to have noticed a lot of pubs turning into indian restaurants.
I don't think the smoking is an issue, people just nip outside. |
