But I still like Futurology. I should be getting around to ranking the albums by this time next Saturday. It's still got that sheen to it!
I prefer the The Horrors by far to this (a band that have been far more successful with employing the synth)... Heck, I even prefer the Speedy record that was put out after about 17 years later

The first class journalist is referring to the review he wrote, and the Manics fans' response in the comments below. Not that this makes the the whole thing any less ridiculous. Funny, though, I posted the link to this "article" (or whatever you wanna call it) on my FB timeline a couple of days ago, writing that that guy may be right about us Manics fans being a bit nutty and a "special bunch", but that this is one reason why I love Manics fans. Someone replied that we're indeed a close community. To which a (musician) friend of mine replied: "Certainly the most tone deaf." Which is pretty much the same as "tin-eared", as the author of that rubbish called it. And another friend told me a couple of weeks ago that he wanted to see the band live pretty early on (1991-93) and was already at the venue, but then he heard them soundcheck and he thought that was so bad, he actually left and never went to the gig after all.

I don't get it. What exactly are they referring to? I'm assuming it's about the vocals, but maybe I really am tone deaf and tin-eared, because honestly, I have no idea what they mean. Yes, James is a bit out of tune every now and then, but who isn't during a live show? Surely he's not a bad singer?!? I'm starting to feel like in that joke in which people are driving in a car and there's an announcement on the radio warning them about a ghost driver on the road they're on, and one of them goes: "One ghost driver? Hundreds!"

well if your friend is judging the band today on the fact he didnt like what he heard at a soundcheck 20 odd years ago then quite frankly he's a fool

That's what I told him. But he's "old" and into Carter USM, so what I can I say... Still wondering though where all this is coming from. Maybe "he can't sing" or "they can't play their instruments properly" is just the easiest way to slag off bands you don't like, regardless of how good they actually are.

... at least Richey wasn't plugged in, so you wouldn't have heard it anyway.

DOes anyone know which interview it was where James said something along the lines of "Nobody aprt from us writes a song with 4 different chorus'"? I just remember it cos when I got the album (and just again now) I read through the lyrics and all the chorus' are the same, so I don't understand what he was on about, and I'm like 80% sure he was referring to either Misguided Missile or Black Square. Hmmm...

He was referring to "Misguided Missile" which does, in fact, have 4 different choruses.

I don't get it, the chorus is the same though, "I am the strum and drang, I am the schaden freude, I was the boy who sang, I can still fill your void, still fill your void" that's that on every chorus.... I'm looking at them right now.

These are the other lyrics set to the same music as the chorus. I'm guessing that James considers those to be choruses too, even though to you and I it reads like a middle 8th or something:

"Society never made an effort with me
And I was willing to be deceived
To understand your country you must understand yourself
It leads you to the path of least resistance
I destroyed the image of myself
Borrowed from pain and tolerance"

So basically he's arguing that they're the only band who would alter the lyrics in a song's chorus. Deluded.

They're one of the few bands who regularly only write and repeat one verse in a song, though. He should boast about that next time.
