Listening to the demo for Rewind the Film (the song) worries me - it sounds like there is a shitload of potential for Naysmith to ruin it with his Mighty fucking Wurlitzer on the tour.

"Settles left to score" - awful use of language on the 30 year war demo. Kind of ruins it.

For anyone with a Deezer subscription, the demos are on there. A lot of them are great, 50YOW sounds particularly brilliant stripped back.

Yeah, I had to go over that one a few times in my brain before I worked out why it sounded wrong every time I listened to it.

Somehow that one sounds immense live. Very atmospheric, no circus music.

The hugely stripped back nature of the demo of RTF, along with Wire's weird vocal makes it kind of unbearably beautiful and heartbreaking... until the ultra-naff Fernando-esque chorus instrumentation! Ugh. The anguish of the Manics fan.

Not to mention that James seems to have treated it as a pissabout on guitar as the song goes on...

I'd imagine those kids providing the "Another Brick in the Wall" chorus would've been set up for a life of royalties had their vocals been used on the real song.

really like the 'sullen welsh heart' demo, but it does lack the female backing slightly - but maybe that would affect JDB's take on the chorus? saying that, I can't help but feel he doesn't *quite* give the full welly / bite that bit deserves; he's at roughly 80% welly there. probably live, that chorus would sound awesome, especially as he seems to be doing it in his acoustic spots.

+1

Sounded excellent in Newport. The presence of Richard Hawley may have helped this immeasurably mind.

It's strange that they went through the hassle of recording the kids choir for the demo and then not use it on the final version of the song. Would have been unique within the MSP repertoire....

I much prefer the guitar line on the '3 ways...' demo - as much as I like the epic strings on the studio version, they do overwhelm that guitar part a little.

A good call I think, they really don't work for me beyond being an entertaining curio.

They made me think of Dom som fφrsvann by Kent immediately, where a children's choir is used in a very similar way to make devastating lyrics even more creepy. I have kicked the album version out of my RTF in consequence, I think they choir is great and I would have loved them to keep it. I also love how the solo rises over the sparse arrangement. Demo wins on two counts.
