I remember sitting listening to the Lamacq show on Radio 1 on a Monday night in 1999 waiting for the first play. Sounded so wrong and yet so right.

It's almost as bad as Underdogs, lyrically. I suppose it worked at the time, now it's just another song by the Manics about the Manics. I still don't really know what the title has to do with the rest of the lyric.

'Can you hurt us anymore?' 2004 says, 'yes'.

Try listening to it properly? The "us" in the song is the masses, not the band...

No, the masses are still so in love with the classes.
It's about the working classes and their insistence on sticking to and holding in reverence institutions and authorities which do them no good. Or, at least that's how I always interpret it.
I don't think it's a song about the band at all.
