What does
That tree meant more to you than love
line even mean?
Is it the same "cherry blossom tree"? Or is it some other tree?

Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, the booklet leads me to believe the song is about a dog no longer with us, most likely Molly. I don't know if Molly is still alive, I'd like to think shes is, but she's a lab who last starred in the This Is My truth booklet 12 years ago, so, you know...

Dogs love trees anyway, either to piss up or take branches from to chew. If my dog theory is correct, this is automatically my new favourite Manics song of all time.

This song + nostalgic home videos of childhood pets = masses caught hook, line and sinker.

Oh, Christ, Nick's been writing so much about Richey all these years so when you hear a new song about someone you automatically suggest it's about him again!
This dog theory brings a whole new meaning to this song.

I don't think the song is about a dog. However I assumed the dog on the postcard was Lucy, the one Nicky had when he was a kid if I'm not mistaken, as he addresses the postcard to Mam, Dad and Lucy.

But the SKON postcard is the one with a dog on the front and isn't addressed to anyone. Also, written at the bottom of the SKON lyric is 'Dogs, people, songs - they all go in the end', so whether it is or isn't about a dog, I'm officially making it a song about a dog for me and anyone else who wants it be as of RIGHT NOW.

As for the Lucy/Molly conundrum, wasn't Lucy previously in an amazing early photo of the Manics where she revealed herself to be a yellow lab?

Thanks for the explanations. Apparently my knowledge of Manics dogs isn't that good then...

Tree? TREE?! Okaaaaay Cause all trees mean more than love like. The search for truth may have stopped but the search for this 'tree' goes on

Dramatic update. I just watched the DVD. SKON is for dogs (and people you've lost) but I feel terrible because... Molly is alive and on the DVD (!) while Nicky explains this in the snow.

Since my last post I have become slightly concerned that I didn't take into account that Molly was filmed in the snow, which would have been, what, nine months ago? Anyway, let's just assume for now that she is still alive and well. I don't mind telling Nicky his new single is shit but you can't be messing with a man's love of his dog!

I don't know if I'll regret posting this screenshot but here is the star of Socialist Serenade!

The iPlayer thing of the Jools show has subtitles? And it says it's "that tree meant more to you than life".

Also, that blonde backing singer really is annoying. Loves herself much?

I've not thought about the meaning of the song too much, but thought it was kind of a sad emotional love song in a way, thinking back to a time in ones life, picturing someone laid on a beach or wherever in the sun and they're now gone for whatever reason from your life and you're alone and lonely. This is my take on the song personally and what goes through my mind when listening.
