This deluxe album nonsense.

Is futurology essentially a 16 track album?

Does the fact that we are given 3 extra tracks on the deluxe version highlight a difficulty from the band to omit these tracks from the actual album?

Have they restricted themselves to no more than 13 tracks no matter what because of the criticism levelled at KYE for length?

All a marketing ploy. Don't buy into it (pun intended)

I think the bonus tracks are essentially what would have been b-sides if we were following the traditional release format.

not sure trackwise, but what I will say is I love the deluxe editions, fit nicely on a bookshelf and look lush - wish they redid the whole discography in this format

Yeah, probably b-sides that never were. Album's still 13 tracks long, just a good way to get demos and leftovers in a fancy book.

Glad we've got more extra tracks that would have been b-sides instead of O2 tracks, although when the remainder of those tracks will get issued is a mystery!

I'm quite frankly surprised that they thought a sizeable amount of people could be arsed to collect all the O2 tracks that way.

Agree with you Andy, love the book formats of JFPL, Postcards, National Treasures and RTF. Whether the band were unsure about putting the extra tracks on the album or not, from what I've read so far they certainly don't seem to be throwaways. Different extras and o2 tracks on the Japanese version is an interesting choice though - almost like CD1/CD2 singles from before. Personally I've always enjoyed comparing the demo versions though, even if they're 'just' acoustic. For an extra £5 fortunately there wasn't a choice to make for me.

Because its great to hear them before the sheen comes in? Why complain? Nobody is forcing you to buy it are they? You probably got it for free anyway...

Yes, it is a 16 track album. At least that, might be a bit longer even. As far as I gather, no one's heard Anti Social Manifesto or that other Japanese bonus track so we don't know if their as good. But those 3 extra songs off the deluxe edition are mastered and mixed with the exact same level of quality as the album tracks. The same amount of effort and detail has been give to their production and structure. And songwriting-wise they are easily on par with the rest of the album. (Not to mention they flow very naturally if added after Mayakovski, and in my opinion, vastly improve the tracklisting, taking it from an 8 to a 9 or possibly a 9.5.)

Which can't be said about the actual b-sides off the WMTTB EP, which are nice Manics b-sides but nowhere near the glory of, eg, Empty Motorcade. (Motorcycle Emptiness reference, anyone?)

Sorry for the "expert opinion" tirade, I just really like the album. Goes perfectly with my new speakers too
