Yeah, the cathedral Thanks for that link, it really ties in well with the song's lyrics...

This goes back to the analogy of sex work. I think the second part is "to show displeasure is shameful" (whether that disgust is derived from the piteous nature of the client or the pain of the work), not "to show the shame belonging to displeasure".

Prostitutes aren't meant to look disgusted during their work, obviously. Those that enjoy or give the appearance of being enthusiastic about the transactions tend to be more successful (just ask the authors of SuperFreakonomics... or not).

Who does the 'pity or pain' belong to, then? Is it about prostitutes getting looks of pity, or is it about the feelings of the prostitute?

If I put it with the previous line "there's no part of my body that has not been used", it might be the way people are using the body of a prostitute, people who feel pity or people who want to inflict pain.

I've always thought 'All virgins are liars, honey' might have an extra reference to the virgin Mary.

I know "I'm Not Working" is about Nicky's fear of flying, but I've both musically and lyrically always associated it with social anxiety. It might be hard to understand if you don't have it (or experience it in a different way), but the music kind of makes me feel detached and dreamlike (but at the same time like there's some sort of pressure bearing down that makes you fearful), kind of like the mood is for me during an interaction, while lyrics like "sweating out intelligence like I don't know what it is" call to mind both the discomfort involved in a social situation and its tendency to disable your usual functioning self.

Putting the "personal" back in personal interpretations though I guess.

What meaning does anyone derive from it? I'm talking about the words in the edited version mostly, but if you wanna go for the full lyric - go ahead.
