Setlist of songs they don't play (enough of)

Jumping on the setlist bandwagon, I was sitting on a loooooong flight yesterday and was just randomly going through my Manics albums listening to whatever track here and there.

I had a cup of tea with 3 sugars (I know! but I needed to wake up) and actually listened to RiF for the first time since before the summer. The 2nd half is FANTASTIC particularly Sequels and Broken Algorithms (especially for a guitar muso like myself).

It was such a pity that didn't play these tracks live. And it got me thinking about other the other great tracks that the Manics seem to ignore (or can't be arsed learning, which is my theory for a lot of songs they don't play).

So here is my Manics setlist of songs that they never played or didn't play enough of. (I'm allowing myself 4 b-sides max.)

Sleepflower
Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldf allapart
Intravenous Agnostic
Ready for Drowning
Next Jet to Leave Moscow
The Girl Who Wanted to Be God
I Miss the Tokyo Skyline
Sequels
Auto-Intoxication
Comfort Comes
Freedom of Speech Won't Feed My Children

Acoustic
Mr Carbohydrate
Door to the River

Nobody Loved You
Further Away
Donkeys
Cardiff Afterlife
In Eternity
Broken Algorithms
Montana/Autumn/78
Black Dog on my Shoulder
1985

Has the band ever talked about Intravenous Agnostic? It seems to be a fan favourite but the band have only attempted once (probably only after finding out no one was recording the gig)

I always thought they saw it like they used to see Revol - a bit ridiculous overall.

But with 3 guitarists (and it'll probably be 4 or 5 on the next tour - yes I am bitter) you would think they could play it.

Only comments I can remember from the band was that it is 'too fast' and to be fair it isn't so much the guitarists but Sean who would have the trouble.

Would be great to hear it rolled out one day but can't help but think it has the potential to be quite disappointing live. I love the feel of all of the more 'grungy' KYE tracks but hearing it played just slightly too slow in too big a room would be heartbreaking.

Played too fast in a room with sweat on the walls is another prospect entirely but that ain't happening any time soon!

Easily in the top five Manics bridge sections.

The band aren't keen on Know Your Enemy though are they so guess that's why Intravenous Agnostic gets no look in....and as my least favourite album I'm none too bothered neither Mr Bradfield seemed to think the whole thing was too rushed, in an effort to be punk and true they went too fast and didn't reflect or work as much as they should have done on the album...Intravenous does sound like throwing everything in there to be fair

(As frustrating as it can prove to be for fans - I for one am a fan of Gold which the band dislike for reasons I get whilst also thinking they should ease up on themselves - I like how they can be so critical often over critical of their past works...in many ways they feel more like authors than musicians but they refuse to bend to crowd pleasing and add anything in there 'as its a fan favourite' but rather seem bemused as to why it would be rather than precocious)

I like the bit in the NME interview where Nicky talks about making a little list of Manics songs which mention artists and paintings. And come to think of it, most of them would be great to hear live - To Repel Ghosts, Between the Clock and the Bed, Interiors.

Although I like KYE, there aren't really any standout singles from it. Masses Against the Classes is the standout track from that era and although they released some decent singles from KYE (Found That Soul, Ocean Spray, Let Robeson Sing) none of them are really lead off singles.

Found That Soul is a brilliant set opener.... Probably the best of the dozen or so I've seen over the years

Masses isn't really part of KYE, despite it being tacked on as a bonus track in some regions. It's more of a full stop on the TIMT era.

Can't say that I agree. Thematically and musically it's closer to Know Your Enemy. It's got a looseness to it which contrasts to the meticulous and often suffocating production of TIMT.

I have always thought of Masses as the first song of the KYE era rather than the last song of the TIMTTMY era. Even though it was released roughly equidistant between the two albums, it just feels more in line with the fuzzy, scratchiness of KYE than the (mostly) smoother production of TIMTTMY.

Someone should ask the band sometime how they see it.

It's totally subjective anyway, how one feels about it. But factually, Masses appears on some versions of KYE and not TIMTTMY, including the 2009 re-issues where the laws of time wouldn't get in the way like they did in 1998 .

I would say it fits in to the KYE 'era' as it was a departure from TIMT and has a similar sound to some of the songs on KYE to the point where you could imagine it fitting on that album. In the same vein, I would probably include There by the God and Forever Delayed as being in the Lifeblood 'era' even though they didn't appear on that album.

Agree about Found That Soul being a good set opener (they need to make a change up from Motorcycle Emptiness opening and that would be a good choice!!), what I meant by "lead off single", was the first one to be released from an album.
