Just received the following text from my big brother;

FUTUROLOGY NOTES

1.Futurology

Anthemic. Memorable lyrics and melody line. Interesting production.

8/10

2.Walk Me To The Bridge

Great production. Strong 80’s feel. Nice Bass.

8/10

3.Let’s Go To War

Like the drama in the chorus. Bit flat melodically.

7/10

4.Next Jet To Leave Moscow

Nice feel. A bit boring.

6/10

5.Europa Geht Durch Mich

Whole album should have been like this. Should all have been in German. Very catchy, great Krautrock feel.

9/10

6.Divine Youth

Nice interplay of vocals. Haunting feel. Beautiful melody. Bit boring overall.

7.5/10

7.Sex, Power, Love and Money

Like the energy. Dirty feel. Catchy melody. Ultimately outstays its welcome.

7.5/10

8.Dreaming a City

Proper Low feel. Great.

9/10

9.Black Square

Doesn’t leave much impression.

5/10

10.Between the Clock and the Bed

Nice production. First half a little bland and doesn’t leave much impression. Second half takes it to a different level and redeems the track. Great closing harmonies and melody.

7/10

11.Misguided Missile

Interesting bass line and production feel. Overall boring and doesn’t stick.

6/10

12.The View From Stow Hill

Good production. Nice feel. Again, a little boring.

6/10

13.Mayakovsky

“I got blisters on my fingers” ????

Nice instrumental but not as good as DAC.

7/10

OVERALL RATING: 71%

Fantastic in parts, intriguing in others and overall a very interesting listen.

Disappointing that the Germanic feel was not explored more. Too many tracks, a smaller number of cuts with a more consistent feel could have tipped the balance. Strays a little close to Lifeblood-style blandness at times.

Very good overall, not a masterpiece but definitely impressive.

8.5 with the standard version, 9 with the spikier bonuses added. Some magnificent tracks and fantastic to be exploring different paths and ideas yet again and pull of them off with aplomb. Definitely in my top 3/4 Manics albums.

It’s a good 8 at the moment (8.5 for the deluxe, really like some of the demos and Empty Motorcade). Happy with that.

As for ranking it alongside the others, not sure yet. Going to live with it a bit longer before making that kind of commitment!

Same here. It has grown up to a 9.5 from since I last rated it. Also, one of the 1s here is accidental. It's mine. I throught I was saying it's their best. Not giving it a one.

Sorry you've made a typo there son cause surely you are not telling us that Gold Against the Soul is the greatest thing the Manics have ever done.

Yes, son, I am. It was my first MSP album and will always have a personal importance to me despite other other albums being better musically.

Personal importance is one thing but when you're judging a stand alone piece of art you've got to be objective. I know you're not actually telling me Gold against the soul is the greatest thing they've ever done so I'll let you mull it over and get back to us with a new top 5.

This album is growing on me. At first listen I couldn't really get a handle on it, but after a few spins it's stating to seep into my brain. I rated it a solid 8/10, and I enjoy this disc much more than last year's Rewind The Film.

I think a great many of us were hoodwinked into thinking it would be.

Europa is probably the only "bonkers guitar" song on the album inthe style of JFPL. Shame - as I love it when they play unconventional, jittery rock.

I really like it, although I wish 'Empty Motorcade' was on the main album, as it's my fave track. 7/10.

Finally got to listen to the album today and I think I'm in love with it already as I can't stop playing it. Last Manics album I felt this way was Lifeblood ten years ago.
My favourites at the moment are TNJTLM and Black Square. I'd rated this 10 if they would have put on it The last time I saw Paris and Empty Motorcade.
