My favourite moments on JFPL are the first two verses of Marlon JD, love those lyrics, really visceral, controlled rage:
He stood like a statue As he was beaten across the face With a horse whip Where the wounds already exist A well-oiled rifle And never lonely, Marlon JD If you want to count down, countdown Give him some dignity Learn to live without clutter To live without luxury Sometimes I envy them Goodnight yourself, Marlon JD He did not defend himself He didn't even raise his hand I will not beg because This is how I am |

DCS is brilliant. Music is great (yes, props to Sean too, he is one of my favourite songwriters) and great delivery from James.

I think the best part of the album is the "learn to live without clutter, to live without luxury". that noise before the line comes in as well. the music is just perfect.
Actually no, there are loads of great moments. The soundbite at the end of Doors Closing Slowly, the Christian Bale soundbite, the epic bit of This Joke Sport Severed... great album. Wish I'd seen them play it live. |

This is a great line but it's a little bit not fully used on the album. The live version on 29th May Roundhouse last year was the best musical moment of the 00s. James shouted the last words and I was shaking like a little baby swallowing the first musical bit in its life.
I agree that they killed the songs with damn picturesque. That was criminal. But All Is Vanity and Doors Closing Slowly are one of their best songs ever and they have been constantly removing picturesque from my head, so let's hope

I like Picturesque. There is room for both songs!

That's a shame, seeing as how "All Is Vanity" and "Doors Closing Slowly" are the lyrics as Richey intended them. "Picturesque" is a hatchet job lyrically and as such I've got no time for it. Guess that's the exact opposite of how you feel mate, but it's an interesting issue.

The North American version of 'Doors Closing Slowly' had nothing. The song only seemed half-finished. And I went 'what is this'? It was only when I read some reviews about soome soundbite being used and a clock ticking and then heard the UK version that I realised that all the samples in the album were taken out.

So many negative comments on "Doors closing slowly". I've always thought it was one of the gems on the album.

The demo version is much better than the album version, I think. James's voice is a bit higher and softer and it makes the song much more affecting. I also like the way they play the intro during the chorus on the demo
