Yeah, I'm not sure why they've turned into a six piece gig lineup now. If you played me a Motorcycle Emptiness or A Design For Life or whatever played as a four piece, five piece, or six piece I think the only way I'd be able to tell the difference is through James' vocals. But that's just me, don't have the greatest ears meself. I don't play guitar either, so I don't know if it'd be more exhausting now for James to do a 22ish song set where he's doing all the guitar on his own, like he used to. I don't know how beneficial the rests he's getting now that he wasn't before are to him.

Still, I don't mind really. Thinking about it, I've seen em as a three piece I think six times, without Murray, Naysmith or Reed and it's been noticeably rawer. The King Tuts and Rough Trade Futurology/Holy Bible gigs are probably both top 5 for me. I love James but sometimes I wish he wasn't such a professional. I want to see him pissed, jumping around, fucking up and having fun. Same goes for both James and Nicky, doing Garageland and No Feelings, they looked like that was the most fun they'd had performing for years. Hope that has some bearing on the next album..

You will believe that no backing musicians are necessary

I personally don't mind Wayne as a backing guitarist, the backing vocals I can do without. It's not a knock at his voice or ability, it's just not suited to Manics songs. I actually really like his work with Boy Cried Wolf and Thirteen:13.
Gavin I thought was brilliant when it came to the trumpet not I really don't see the point in the extra guitar. I can't hear it and really at Leeds from where I was standing I couldn't even see him. If they are going to any musicians then should be for something that isn't already there.

All this said the best Manics gig I've been to in the last several years would have to be James solo show in Sheffield last year.

There's a second guitarist in that clip! You can even see him change guitars between songs!

But I agree with the sentiment. I was lucky enough to see the Rough Trade gig and it was incredible.

Edit: My mistake. On closer inspection I think it's a guitar tech getting the guitar tuned up in time for Tolerate.

Saying all that I agree there’s something special about when it's just the 3 of them and JDB is singing and playing all the guitar parts possible.
They're getting older Shurrup they've some way to their free bus pass yet and how does that stop you playing the geetar anyhows? Memory wanders off som......

They all seem to have been good friends for some years now, doesn't Wayne share a management and I believe his taste for women's tennis player's shirts played a role in winning Nicky's heart so.... Their back catalogue's grown over the years (weird ha) and there's a lot of variation between the songs over the years, as y'say some not really possible to play as a 3 piece, many bands change line-ups engage session musicians....sure they don't take such centre stage but this is the Manics and they're clearly all mates not just hired help.....they're not precious....I don't see the reasons for knicker twisting - generally speaking not necessarily yours Porco....and y'really couldn't ask for a better frontman than James...when he pulls up a rocking chair as Wayne takes over the mic and rocks and knits their balaclavas I'll worry

There is a rapture on the lonely shore
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:

Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.' (from Sea Fever - John Masefield)

And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all" - Emily Dickinson
