3 Pieces Of Advice You'd Give Yourself When Getting Into MSP

Three pieces of advice you'd give yourself from when you first got into the Manics.
If you just got into them this week, well this thread takes all sorts...

You cannot change history. Not one line! But you getting into the Manics?
Well it's not exactly murdering Hitler in the grand scheme of things, is it!

1. You see that copy of "The Nymphs" you've got as you make your way to the checkout at (thinks hard) Our Price? Well go back up the stairs, put it back, and by GT instead. GT. No, not Gin & Tonic, Generation Terrorists!

2. Just because she's a Manic Street Preachers fan, doesn't mean she's the right girl for you. In fact using "Being a Manics fan" as a must be is going to cause you no end of misery!

3. Try not to be too hard on the biggest bands of the 2000's when they appear as you might have to eat a lot of your own shit when you enjoy the title track of the latest Manics album.

1. 1992 - that album C. snatched out of your hands and told you not to buy because they were just a dirty rock band? Go back and get it , you're going to love it.

2. 1996- Get the more expensive CD singles. Not all B-sides are shit

3. 1999 - Go to the millenium gig. Don't discount it cos it's not in london. It would've been a great first manics gig

1 Don't buy the singles, they'll just gather dust
2 Don't tell yourself you'll love whatever they do: there'll come a time where you don't
3 Don't do multiple dates on the same tours

1 - They will take over your life so be prepared!
2- You will need bigger shelves!
3 - Get a car with a CD player for goodness sake!

1) Don't let SATT get you down. It'll all get better soon.
2) Buy the singles when they are released, even if you have to import them. You'll be thankful later.
3) Snag that fancy-pants GT re-release deluxe edition. You know you want it. You can afford it.

1) If you've got the money together, go and see them live, even if it means travelling. Don't be shy.
2) Don't buy vinyls, CD singles, signed posters etc - they'll just take up room in the bottom of a cupboard and you won't want to look at them OR throw them out
3) Don't assume that because you share a like of the band with fans, that you'll get on with all fans... a lot of them are miserable as sin, as are you
4) Give Generation Terrorists more of a listen rather than ignoring it pretty much right up until the Rough Trade acoustic gig...

1) Don't try and form a friendship with the first Manics fan you meet just because you like the same band. She will be horribly judgmental about your level of fandom, and leave you bitter about it for years. (In fact, there is - or at least was - a LOT of one-upmanship amongst fans.)
2) Don't listen to your partner when he criticises you for liking the band and tries to turn you into a fan of stuff you really have no interest in, and (in part) turns you against the decent people you've met through the fandom.
3) Don't feel you have to fit in with what other people think of certain songs/albums etc. Stand up for your own opinion.

1. as a teenager, don't hate on the band in the mid-to-late 90s for appealing to saloon-driving dads in their 30s. you will eventually become a saloon-driving dad in his 30s.

1) Buy the holy bible and everything must go instead of listening to Oasis all the time in 95-97.
2) Wangle going to Manic Millennium.
3) Go see the band in America in 2009, it'll be worth it.

Don't make a documentary film about them. There are easier and cheaper ways to work through your obsession

1) Travel to see them more often, don't just go to the Welsh gigs in the same venues, all of the time!
2) Give Lifeblood more of a chance, you will like it more one day.
3) Listen to the B Sides more.

And as an extra, there will be a song called Autumnsong... Yeah, you don't need to listen to that...

1. Don't go round telling your sister throughout the mid-90s that the Manics are "shit". You'll regret it one day!
2. Go to that fucking Homecoming gig in Cardiff 2002! (including countless other missed gigs)
3. Try not to fall sick the day before the run of three dates in London for JFPL and only end up seeing half a gig!

This is the first one I've noticed where I've wondered about causality. What if telling yourself that caused you to do or not do something which made you sick :O
