THIS (almost).

As you've probably gathered my opinion of KYE has changed a bit over the last day or so
It didn't really have the instantly loveable element to me I must admit, I am converted. It might seem an odd opinion but in many ways it has a direct link to JFPL (despite JFPL being Richey's album), in that they were following an album which was commercially successful and critically acclaimed (TIMTTMY). Just like JFPL they'd proved their point, sold some records with the previous effort and with the record company off their backs they'd let their actual creativity loose. KYE is the result of TIMT's success in the same way that SATT's success gave them the space to create JFPL. I get the feeling that KYE is the music they would have made if they were just doing it for fun.

KYE? A mistake that should not have been unleashed on the public. On the whole a very ecletic, or should I say, confused album. About 30% is listenable. Most surprisingly, I find The Convalescent one of the best tracks on the album (by far).

One of my favorite Manics moments is the last two minutes of “The Convalescent”. James’ wailing falsetto is just fantastic. I don’t know why this song and moment gets over looked by so many fans. “Wattsville Blues” is another favourite. I like the low if sound of the song. This sound was latter to be found on Nicky’s solo album and some of the late b-sides from Postcards.

KYE is the album that every time I listen to it, I find something new in it. It remains the one album both fans and the band themselves often overlook and forget. The album (and era) which isn’t really understood enough. I now refer to this era as the “Cuba Era”. Any other names for it?
I agree with pretty much all of this.
And I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves 'The Convalescent'.I even put that song in a cd I made for a friend.Well, maybe that's why she hasn't asked me for another one since then.

All songs I love aside from Wattsville Blues and possibly His Last Painting. I've always had a big soft spot for KYE.

I'm not against Nicky vocals in general (especially stuff like the same-era Bangkok Novotel) but I find Wattsville Blues unlistenable.

The Convalescent and His Last Painting on the other hand, amongst the finest things they've ever done.

I'm generally not in favour of Nicky vocals but think that they really suit the demo of She Bathed Herself, and think his version is superior to the album version. His vocals give it a really melancholic flavour

KYE (especially the 2nd half) is a great gym album. I shall be lifting heavy to it tomorrow now after seeing this re-appreciation of an album that in hindsight is arguably their 4th best album.

To me it blends into Epicentre, Royal Correspondant etc, I think the middle of the album lacks a lot of inspiration, but the start and end are some of their best work. Very strange album and I love it dearly.

When I get to the track with that click instead of drums... I can't get pass that one.

edit:

to me that couplet sums up perfectly KYE.

I think somewhere inside all the album tracks and b-sides there is a stunning, classic 12 track album. I like a lot of it, apart from So Why So Sad.

I remember JDB once describing this album as the 'burger and chips' album to This Is My Truth, the 'salad' album.

Locust Valley
Ballad Of The Bangkok Novotel
Pedestal
Groundhog Days
Just A Kid
Little Trolls
Masking Tape
Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel
Fear Of Motion

Come on then, let's do this - 12 tracks from KYE and the b-sides:

1 Found That Soul
2 Intravenous Agnostic
3 The Year of Purification
4 Locust Valley
5 Ocean Spray
6 The Convalescent
7 We Are All Bourgeois Now
8 The Ballad of the Bangkok Novotel
9 Dead Martyrs
10 Epicentre
11 Groundhog Days
12 His Last Painting

I'd still be listening to that record.
