Nailed to History (Manics Books)
Manics books, a field I have not yet delved into;
I have seen 'Nailed to History' (by Martin Power) in the local Tower Records and local bookshops for a year or two and wondered, would this be a good 'un? I know 'Everything' by Simon Price is proclaimed to be the best; how would fans rate 'Nailed..'? |

I read it and I liked it. A bit unfair on lifeblood though.

Prefer it to Price's and it's more up to date.

I read it last Christmas, it was enjoyable and quite comprehensive, even if it didn't tell me anything new really. It reads more like a standard biography than Price's which is obviously a bit more personal. The fact that it's relatively up to date is its best selling point I think.

I don't know if Price has any plans to write another biography. There is a lot of history which has been made after "Everything" which needs to be recorded. I still maintain that the Manics need a really deep and detailed biography about the band. One which details their careers from EMG and beyond. Probably would be done after the band call it quits. That's if they ever do call it quits.
The Martin Power book is an ok read.

Price did hint at an update/new version of 'Everything' when he spoke at Velvet Coalmine last month, if I remember correctly he didn't say whether it was something he'd already done or if he was just planning to get round to it though.

Up to EMG is well documented enough. A new work from Price which looks at the year from EMG could be interesting though. Although didn't he slip from favour with the band?

If he has, he didn't mention it. But then I suppose he wouldn't, so I don't know actually. ETA: That was absolutely no use at all was it, sorry

He mentioned something on twitter too, but I got the sense more of a plan.

Thanks very much for the info; methinks I shall go for both books actually; as I have a real hankering to read a good Manics book!

I keep thinking about trying to write a book about every Manics song, with as much detail as possible - influences, lyrical references, trivia about the song, recording/live history etc, but then I realise I'm just too lazy to do the research.

I think the real reason you don't see books like this is because of the sheer effort it would involve and I can see how the blog writers and book writers lose heart to plough on dissecting each track to what seems like little appreciation or acknowledgement from the wider world that doesn't seem to care as much as us for Manic Street Preachers, let alone books on their music. http://manicsdiscog.wordpress.com/ And also FD's Flint with https://manicsongs.wordpress.com/ I imagine threads like this must be a knife in the heart eh, Flint? |

Seems like a few of us have had that similar idea, but not found it plausible.

Picked up 'Death of a Polaroid' recently for £5 out the works bookshop and can see why it was that price so glad I didn't buy it at full price. It could have been a good book maybe should have took a leaf from The Clash's book 'Before & After'
