Dunno what that Paris and St Petersberg is all about though.
The phrase composition rites is a synonym for funeral rites. James wrote this song after listening to a discussion on some radio program about whether a song can still have a world-shattering impact in this day and age. Apparently James' conclusion was that that's not likely, so he wrote a song about how it is futile to try and change the world with a song. Originally the song was to be called Composition Rites, Wire wanted to change it because he thought no one would know what the phrase means. I think the Paris etc. stuff is James' grieving that he lost the one thing that he felt was worth striving for (which, as he has later admitted, may be a wee bit over-dramatic). I'm basing this interpretation on various interviews with James over the past few months.

Yeah, this is what I have pictured as well.

No no, the song's about inheritance.

"Now ashes bone and splinter, what was once the glittering prize/the composition rights (to Michael Jackson's lucrative back catalogue, sunk by pirates off the coast of Jamaica)"

Hmm perhaps but I thought it was a play on the words 'composition rights' surely funeral rites have always been 'ashes, bone and splinter' (whatever splinter is) and never much of a glittering prize.

Great album track but not an inspired choice for a single. This will sink faster than the Belgrano.

Some of us don't need to wait to see how this is going to play out.

On a semi-related note, here are some Spotify figures.

This Sullen Welsh Heart - 111,350
4 Lonely Roads - 54,360
Anthem For a Lost Cause - 50,170

Who dares wins.

Still the best running joke from the best Sunday show the BBC ever had the nerve to show.
