i just don't see the point in saying "hey, i got the album" and then refuse to give any info... sure, no need for sharing mp3s of something you've gotten through work/friends/confidence, but to just show off with it and then climb some hierarchy of forum importance it's just, well, very very small-dicked.

To be honest, I'm inclined to agree. If you have a legitimate early copy, either tell us what you think of it (because as much as I won't be downloading it early, I'm looking forward to reading reviews and opinions as they only serve to whet your appetite for the release) or say nothing at all.

Throwing in potentially made up lyrics (well done, by the way, Thomas! ) just smacks of "ooooh, I've got something you want, but I'm going to tease you with it!"

I think that pretty much says it all.

Sorry, I don't actually have a copy. Just trying to pass the time before the leak. Ooh!

I see your point, but if I had a promo, I wouldn't leak it purely on the basis that it is illegal and I have morals.

A fine standpoint indeed, though I do take exception to being accused of having no morals. As usual with the manics, quite a lot of fans have the album already, but they aren't deciding to not "leak" the album out of any kind of moral or legal strength, they aren't leaking it because of the self satisfaction that comes with feeling superior to other fans. It's the same every time a manics album is due out.

Moreover, there's a difference to sticking a torrent of a new album up a month early and sharing a select few tracks with fellow hardcore (yuck) fans of the band. I'd far rather a community based solely on the band had access to it early, rather than the inevitable torrents and filesharing communities that have a passing interest and don't care if the band succeed, fail or disappear forever off the back of sales.

That said, I'm not a person who believes "leaks" hurt the industry nearly as much as said industry claims it does. Some labels even leak things themselves now as a promotional aid. Ben Folds did it best though, releasing a "half leak" of his new album with tracks he'd made up and recorded on the spot, with a few proper album tracks. That way, the hardcore fans got the full album when it came out, but a few extra tracks that would never have seen the light of day otherwise.

On a side note, HELLO FINN

Not on here there isn't. The latter always quickly leads to the former.

or because of the scary "this copy is watermarked, can be traced, etc etc" stuff. whilst 99% of you suspects it's bullshit, there's 1% that succumbs to being scared of copyright men.

It *is* bullshit. Unless someone is copying a 1:1 image of the disc, it's just...nevermind.

You could just rerecord the whole thing on Audacity at very high bit rate thus eliminating that 1%.

Only if you were a bad person, of course, which noone on here is.
